Rocket
Who on earth decided to call a certain type of lettuce "Rocket"?
If I discovered a new strain of lettuce and was searching for a new name for it, the last label that would spring to mind would be Rocket. What have rockets got in common with lettuces?
I've heard of rockets that have been called Delta and Thor-Able and Expeditor and Aurora, but I've never heard of one that's been named "Lettuce".
So what gives?
Do any other items spring to mind that have been incongrously named?
Spam
That's a great example; Spam.
Who decided - when searching for a name for unsolicited e-mails - to name them after a canned meat product?
Good question, but it really caught on, didn't it?
I've always wondered about Bibb lettuce. Presumably it's named after a person or place, but I always picture a drooling baby when I hear the word. Not a very appetizing association.
Kidney beans, named for the shape, so not incongruous, but also not very appetizing-sounding.
I remember once the poo-bum filter, filtered one of Fish's poems because it contained words it didn't recognise and therefore assumed may be swear word. Words in question? Lollo Rosso !!!
We did laugh...ah the good old days *lets out nostalgic sigh*
