word processing

Now this is perhaps not the most exciting thread in the world, however it would be of use to me.

I have no computer or printer or anything and am thinking of investing in a word processor of some kind (do they even still make them?) so that I can write.

Does anybody know anything about them and where I could get one?

I'm desperate to write and can't at work, well not in any great amount.

Those alphasmart devices look great! Sadly, as usual, they cost twice as much in the UK as they do in the US. £200-300 is pricey. Still, this is really moving in the right direction. I've always wanted a simple, cheap, and rugged device that would do word processing, check email. and some very basic surfing. In volume, I bet they could get the price down to £100. You'll need a usb storage device to be sure you save our work, but those are cheap and can be used for many purposes. The problem is that £350 for one of those devices, versus say £600 for a full laptop, does not make such a good comparison. If you could buy one in the US, however, it would be half that much or less.

Spelling and grammar isn't a prerequisite (sp?) for being a writer! That's what editor's are for...so don't worry about it Megan. (I'm sure you don't anyways)

good...I'm glad it didn't stop you. My grammar is awful...I should have said "spelling and grannar aren't a prerequisite..." For me a lot of it is laziness and not checking!

Hi Jude. The crazed Nuns in the bumper cars made me chuckle. Megan. I didn't let spelling and grammar stop me from achieving anything I set my mind to. Spelling dov not make the Writer. Creativity improves with Dyslexia. Trust me, I know something about this one. Now lets see any one argue that one. hehe.

Yeah, Brother still make them. I used to use one. You could probably get one very cheap 2nd hand on ebay, or anywhere. But why a word processor? The Brother ones are pretty bulky and not cheap new. Why not a 2nd hand laptop? Or if you want it to take to work how about a PDA? You can buy keyboards for them and they are Word compatible. If you want, eventually, to send stuff off it will need to be backed up on a disc somehow, and so you would need Word. Brother have conversion software but it's a pain. I hand write everything these days though. Have you tried that? It slows you down and makes you think about it more.

Oh, I missed the point I think. ha ha. You ONLY have a computer at work. Well then, get a second hand computer. Go to Oxfam. Or Eco places do reconditioned ones. I wouldn't bother with a word processor.

We can get you a good reconditioned computer for £125 with no programmes on it. Email me if you are interested!

No I was serious about the word processor thing Drew - at work I am supposed to be 'working' and really don't have time to write my own stuff. My new job is in Colchester - I live in Norwich, and will be living in Colchester 4 nights a week in b&b. I need something I can take with me on the train without killing myself. So I would need something transportable and quite cheap (a second hand laptop Drew would be my dream, but I don't think I have enough money) Hand writing is good - I do half my writing by hand, but sometimes, when I am in the zone, I have to type (I type about 100 words per minute and it is great for sort of going off into another world).

I grew up in Colchester - where are you working? I paid £250 for my laptop, 2nd hand. It has a DVD and other fancy things. I imagine, if you only wanted one for word processing it would be cheaper. Brother word processors aren't the kind of thing you would want to lug around.

I'll get a price for a second hand, reconditioned laptop for you. Our source is excellent - and it provides jobs for the previously 'unemployable' - so it's win/win.

I'm working at an office in the Hythe at a magazine publishing company. I went to the University of Essex for my first degree and lived all over the town for about 5 years (including Wivenhoe and the Greenstead Estate). What about you? I'll look into laptops. I have always been far to broke to own one.

I used to have a word processor machine and it was wonderful...in 1989. It held about 2 pages of typed text. The best part was the quality of the printing--wonderful. However, it was the size of a regular typewriter, though not nearly has heavy, it was still heavy. I've seen them in shops, but I think they are mostly for people who have to type multipart forms, whihc can't be done via computer. Ebay sounds like a good bet, but I agree a cheap used laptop is the best idea.

My parents ran a pub called the King Cole, which was on the Ipswich Road. Then I lived off the Mersey Road and then finally at Fordham Heath. But I used to go out to the Hole in the Wall pub, the Dickens, and St Marys Arts Centre - I met my first boyfriend in the graveyard. He was deaf in one ear and could hear me only on one side. Actually he wasn't really a boyfriend but....

The King Cole is still there. The Hole in the Wall was my favourite drinking ground as a student and I kissed my now boyfriend for the first time in the graveyard about 5 years ago. Where abouts are you now?

Take a look at these: http://www1.alphasmart.com/ Quite a number of writers from www.nanowrimo.org swear by them, and they're a lot cheaper than a laptop if you're only going to be using it for writing. -Elaine.
