How many of you believe in God?
Is anyone here...
Catholic?
Jewish?
Buddhist?
And is anyone a different religion than those?
What types of traditions or beliefs do you have?
Sorry, MykEl, maybe I didn't make myself clear...
ALL RELIGION IS BOLLOCKS!!
It makes no difference what the central philosophy is or is based upon, sooner or later, some repressed, religious half-wit will come along and turn it into a tool of oppression, torture and genocide (and most of them are sexist and racist and homophobic and sexually repressed and ultra-violent and dogmatic - the list goes on).
Do you really think that if Christ (a historical figure, NOT the son of any god) knew what horrors would be perpetuated in his name he would have trod the path that he trod? Of course he wouldn't. He preached love thy neighbour, respect, etc - quite humanistic virtues and look what happened?
To those who sadly believe evil exists as 'a force' then open your eyes - it is at work in every religion in every continent of the Earth.
I thought you were talking goldfish, burin, but, sure enough...
Carphology - phantom behaviors such as constant picking, plucking, or grasping motions ("woolgathering").
I don't think these threads count then ;o)
There is actually a church that does this now, the Peyote Way Church of God I think it's called. Except it's not a mushroom, it's peyote cactus. Same sort of thing. The church is somewhere in the desert in the US, Arizona or somewhere. Makes you crook as a dog when you drink it apparently.
If I have to bleurgh to get there I'm going to be skipping enlightenment.
I saw a show about the Peyote church, it was done by an Aussie presenter John Saffran (sp) who's hilarious (cross between Louis Theroux (again, sp?) and er, someone else).
He took the Peyote and vomited through most of it. He spent the rest of the time drawing pictures and stuff. More entertaining than it sounds, I promise.
Yes, you got me! I saw it on John Safran. He was there alone in the desert for hours, drinking and drinking this stuff that tastes like shit, and puking, and videoing himself. Has to be a better way to make a living!
Did you see the bit where he got a fatwa declared on Rove McManus? The guy has guts, and funny too
The fatwa thing was legendary. Also: the voodoo stuff.
But hey, did you see the last one, the exorcism? That looked real to me. He doesn't seem the type to put it on.
For anyone that hasn't seen it, JS went around experimenting with all different religions. At the end he had an Evangelical Christian exorcise him and he went all crazy on stage.
Real? Power of suggestion? A fake reaction for TV?
It really didn't look fake.
mexican truffles are good.
You can buy magic mushrooms on ebay.
It's quite legal to grow them and sell them fresh and untreated. It's only when you prepare them that they become class a. hmm, I never tried fly agaric. Liberty caps are the most popular in uk. Thin long stalks, nipple like heads and can be found september-october in a field near you :)
Psychoactive mushrooms are known as "Gods Flesh," by the medicine men and women of Mexico.
... and, lo, there was a man who was journeying from Jerusalem to Jericho and fell among thieves, who beat him and left him for dead.
Then a priest passed that same way, but ignored him and hurried on his way.
And, behold, a Levite, did exactly the same.
Then a trainee nun came by, and she got down off her donkey and said to the man:
"You should get a job instead of lying in the road all day, then you'd be able to afford private medical insurance! Vote Conservative!"
It has been claimed that some early religions were based around the sacred mushroom Amanita (Fly Agaric) and that the worshipers would all partake and share altered conciousness.
Since the mushroom was made into a drink it does seem a bit similar to the magic wine of Christianity. Still, somehow I doubt that modern mainstream religions would sanction anything that might induce mass hallucinations and encourage their congregations to think...
Actually, Neil, Thatcher did quote the parable of 'the Good Samaritan' and - ignoring the fact that the Samaritans were enemies of the Jews and that other Jews walked past their beaten and robbbed fellow countryman without even a kind word - pronounced that the moral of the tale was that the Samaritan could afford to look after the Jew!
[%sig%]
Hm, I believe that the greatest gift we are blessed with as human beings is an insight to an intelliengence greater than our own. What that is I'm sure I'll never know, in life or death.
Neil!!! I have to say I laughed and laughed at your re-work of "the good samaritan"
I shall look at myself long and hard.
BTW I am going to the LIb dem party on Thurs night so look for me in the news coverage (I know I don't vote for them but some of their policies are sound and I couldn't get an invite to the conservative do)
I'm an atheist, all religion is a disease of thinking that had infected humankind since someone got up one morning and thought, 'hang on, I'm going to die, that's not very good is it? I'm a lot more special than the animals and so I've decided I'm going somewhere else, ah, yes, I'm going to heaven where I can meet all my dead family and chums, that should keep me relatively sane for most of my life - now, who don't I like so I can persecute, torture, murder and have wars with?'
Religion! Bollocks and nonsense!
I am a member or the Order of Sisters of St Arsene Wenger. Our Convent is in Highbury. My mission in these troubled times when Beelzubub Mourinho hast emerged from Hades.

Clearly I need to study up on football more intensively. I was thinking, "I've never heard of a saint called Arsene." The joke completely passed me by.
*blushes*
I think that spirituality gets highjacked by various religions to further their own causes. Normally to oppress women. Why was there no female candidate for pope? n ys stp usng txt it fkng anyng
