Devils and Dust

If there is a better lyric and a better execution of a lyric this year then I'll eat anyone's hat (including Liana's.)
A brilliant performance. To the point of heartbreak,
So many of you out there dont get him.

Devils and Dust
Bruce Springsteen

Got my finger on the trigger
But I don't know who to trust
I look into your eyes
There's just devils and dust

We're a long, long way from home Bob
Home's a long, long way from us
Feel the dirty winds blowin'
Devils and dust

I got God on my side
I'm just trying to survive
But if what you do to survive
Kills the things you love

Fear is a powerful thing
It can turn your heart black you can trust
It'll take your God-filled soul
Fill it with devils and dust

Well I dreamed of you last night
In a field of blood and stone
Blood began to dry
And a smell began to rise

Well I dreamed of you last night Mom
In a field of mud and bone
And your blood began to dry
The smell began to rise

Got God on our side
We're just trying to survive
But if what you do to survive
Kills the things you love

Fear is a powerful thing
It'll turn your heart black you can trust
It'll take your God-filled soul
Fill it with devils and dust
It'll take your God-filled soul
Fill it with devils and dust

Now every woman and every man
They wanna take your right to stand
Find the love with God wills
The faith that He commands

I've got my finger on the trigger
Tonight faith just ain't enough
And I look inside my heart
There's just devils and dust

But I've got God on my side
And I'm just trying to survive
But if what you do to survive
Kills the things you love

Fear is a dangerous thing
It'll turn your heart black you can trust
It'll take your God-filled soul
Fill it with devils and dust
It'll take your God-filled soul
Fill it with devils and dust

"So many of you out there dont get him." We are only the little people, who know nothing. Thankyou for showing me the way to enlightenment.

Do you want some relish for the hat Ralphie? Is Brucie getting influenced by Garth Brooks and C&W fodder these days?

I think Bob is a ref to Dylan.

Yes, it's a ref to Dylan all right. He's borrowed from him to with phrases such as 'god on our side', and what I believe to be a tip towards Oscar Wilde with, 'kills the things you love'. Bruce is second only to Bob as a lyricist and interpreter of his generation, in my mind. Both of them will be admired and referred to as inspirations by present and future generations. I have never heard or read any of their peers ever say they were anything but the best. Good music isn't always about purity of voice, and there is hardly a person on the planet that can interpret a Dylan song apart from the man himself.

Ralph, I support your right to put Bruce up for lyricist of the year/decade/century, but your original post kind of indicated that if you thought that these lyrics were shit, then somehow you were some how sub-normal(in some way). As it happens, I thought they were okay lyrics, but to try and persuade me that they were superior to anything that I have ever heard, could be construed as elitist or arrogant. I once took issue with a friend of mine for remonstrating that Simply Red were shit (although I agreed), because he insisited on being so evangelical about it. One man's Springsteen is another man's Joe Dolce. (and hands up to being Cony Took)

I'm surprised that George, being such an outspoken atheist, likes both Dylan and Springsteen with their constant references to God... In fact Springsteen has said of this album: "All the songs are about people whose souls are in danger or at risk. They all have something eating at them. Some come through successfully and some come to a tragic end.” [%sig%]

Mykle. your incessant and obssessional fixation with all things religious is tiresome in the extreme. Why don't you just crucify yourself then you can feel your stupid fucking gods equal? You will NEVER understand me, because you're too self-indulgent to ever progrees to a level where you could understand anyone. Why does Springteens quote, if correct, have to be a religious staement? Do you EVER read, hear or see ANYTHING without having to impose a religious connotation? You're so fucking sad, I feel sorry for you.

Only the lyricists of the respective songs know whether they were exclusivley referring to 'God' as religion perceive it. To conclude that the listener must concur with the writer, purely because they mention God, is arrogant (a recurring theme) and I'm sure you have only mentioned this to have a go at George (another recurring theme) You must be bored of slagging George, try me, I'm in the mood.

I thought about changing to "Sunny" but no doubt the ghost of Al Jolson would come along moaning that he had been 'sonnyboy' all his life... My how Al has changed over the years:
