plastic surgery

Somebody pointed out to me a while ago that, whilst computer games are rapidly evolving ever more realistic graphics, plastic surgery is becoming more and more popular, and at some point the two curves will cross and the people on your x-box will look more realistic than the people in the street.

I would agree, although I think we should differentiate between people needing reconstructive surgery (or even 'cosmetic' surgery for something like a really bad overbite) and those who carve themselves up because Heat magazine told them Barbie is prettier than they are.

Oooh, ooh! How about this? Plastic surgeons invent a new type of skin that refracts light, making you *impossible* to look at! You wouldn't be invisible, exactly - it would just be like people's gazes sort of slide off of you. What then?

Actually, Heat probably wouldn't; I couldn't think of another crap mag while I was typing, but you know what I mean. Women's mags seem to fall into two categories: the 'gee we know you think you're ugly so here's how to look beautiful like Catherine Zeta Jones' type or Women's Weekly types with articles on how to recover from your husband's secret affairs. I've always thought that the hardest but most gratifying thing anyone can do is learn to accept and love themselves exactly the way they are; however, I realise this feat is much easier said than done, and some people would rather go under the knife than do the work on themselves from the inside out. Again, corrective or reconstructive surgery is a bit different...! I always liked whatshername Roddick's motto: I like my wrinkles; I've earned every one of them.

I remember when Betty Ford got her face lift lo these many years ago. I thought she looked horrible but most women seemed to be oohing and aahing over the 'improvement.' I can't remember if the facelift came before or after the rehab. Then again, the technology was probably primitive in the 70s compared to today, so that might have been part of the problem. I just realised that once plastic surgery becomes cheap enough and good enough great swathes of the population are going to change their faces to look like celebrities. Every month. I've become a bit of an expert at plastic surgery in recent years. Everytime I've been obliged to eat an in-flight meal I've become a little more adept at it!
