melvyn bragg etc.

these are hard times ... one of the by products for me is an unhealthy obsession with Melvyn Bragg ...

i saw him once in the foyer of Leicester Haymarket Theatre (with David Puttnam) at the World Premiere of his instantly forgotten musical The Hired Man ...

and that telly programme set in cumbria was Right Saucy ...

anyway one of the things i constantly find cheering is the memory of hearing his hair described as "the open lid of a Grand Piano .."

i know it is NO kind of thread ... but i NEEDED to say it ...

thank you for listening ...

yours as ever

Actually, I have always liked Melvin Bragg (takes a swig of Jack Daniels and continues...). He's bright, calm and quite a talented writer. It's not his fault that he's has a rather silly nasal sing-song voice and hair that grows more bouffant with each passing day. I like him. So there. Top Gear, though Fishy? PANTS.

andrea, melvyn bragg fancies himself as a bit of a thespian. among other things he used to present a programme in the uk called something like Film Review, where he would say that every film that anybody had ever heard of is rubbish. he'd then bang on about a wonderful film that almost noboby could go and see because it was being shown only at one cinema in london. this would typically be a subtitled affair about an estonian farmer who had lost a goat. [however there is no truth in the rumour that he is behind the attacks on america as revenge for them voting Porky's the funniest film ever made.]

Did the farmer find the goat? Answers in Estonian, please.

melvyn didn't give too much of the story away i'm afraid, eddie. he was a bugger like that. seem to remember something about the search for the goat being a universal metaphor, if that helps...but i could be wrong...

The goat is a symbol of our lost innocence and the farmer is the human will to seek knowledge. See we have lost the knowledge when we lost our innocence. If we regain our innnocence we regain our knowledge. The farmer never finds the goat because innocence cannot be regained. Simple really, oh the film is called "The farmers missing wife" well that's a loose translation. By the way my hair is a personal fashion statement! i am of course fashoinably in style. I also deplore the fact that my thesbian lifestyle is being ridiculed in this way. (ahh itchy nads....cough) ah erm....well......goodbye!

er... thanks for clearing that up for us, Melv. May I suggest Savlon for the nads? Failing that, axle grease.

Fishwife, Are you totally obsessed with the Braggs of this world? Do you know that 'Melvyn Bragg' is Glasgow rhyming slang for xexyool intacoors? (a bit of censor-dodging there). A 'Billy Bragg' means 'body of a builder with the soul of a poet', though I can't quite remember where that definition came from.... Me, I've got the body of a poet (Ginsberg) with the soul of a builder (Bob, the).
