I need to find the unicorn!

Hello everyone - I need your help. When I was little, I read a book about a unicorn - it had a pink front cover and 'unicorn' in the title - and every so often I think about it. All I can remember are tiny bits about a girl with long red hair and a unicorn, which might have been the last unicorn but I'm not sure. Anyway, I really want to read it again so any help with what its called would be great! Sorry its so vague but my memory is very patchy! Thank you x
PS I'm pretty sure that the picture on the front cover was of a mountain with a castle at the top, a unicorn galloping down it and the red haired girl's face at the bottom!

My friend Ali has a theory about unicorns. One day, walking in the country whilst off her swede on hallucinogenic substances, she saw a horse and noticed a very distinct, swirling spiral of energy coming from it's forehead and ending in a point a couple of feet out. Could it be, she wonders, that the unicorn image dates back to the times when we were still able to see the dance of Cosmic energy, unaided by chemicals? Or not??

Are you sure that it had the word 'unicorn' in the title? If not, it might have been Elidor, by the Welsh writer Alan Garner. If you like unicorns, even if it isn't the book, it's a fantastic story.

Thanks for the feed back wolfgirl, but I dont think that was it. I do like unicorns though so I'm going to go down to my library and see if they have the book you recommended - thanks again!

I immediately thought of Ellidor (and shuddered, as The Owl Service is without doubt the worst book I have ever read, and as had to read it at school with slower-paced readers, had to read it a number of times) Silver on the Tree was very good, one of the Dark is Rising series. I liked those a lot. This is what you need search engines to be able to do "Book, character called Brian in it, someone falls into a treacle well. Generate name and author" Let's hope Bill Gates is working on it. I keep toying with a websit called tipofthetongue.com which will prompt you when you see a minor character actor in something and a splinter in your mind means that you can't rest until you know what else he has been in. I have just spent two weeks trying to recall the name of the old character in Hollyoaks who was a gay DJ (Baz, for the record) Am rambling and not about unicorns, so will now shut up.

Andrew - you must have been watching Crossroads when you wondered what the gay dj in Hollyoaks was called - I did that too! Robert - When I was little I didnt realise that unicorns were mythical and cried for ages when my mum told me I couldnt have one. They were always white in books and on tv - I wonder if you can get brown and black ones? (Sorry - just slipped back into the comforting childhood world of make believe!)

nessa - sorry for all these pathetic in-jokes; if you click the link to The Book Place and search on unicorn, it comes up with over a hundred book titles - perhaps you'll recognise the one you're looking for?

We have informed our client, Mr Hitchaiku, that his previous comment in this thread could be construed as suggesting that Ms Ivoryfishbone hands out lollipops to Elves in the privacy of her own home. We appreciate that this practice is illegal under the 'Feeding of Fictional Characters Act' of 1888. Mr Hitch has subsequently decided to offer Ms Ivoryfishbone an out-of-court settlement of 20,000 Ivoryunicornhorns. Yours etc. Unique, Horn & Elidor Literary Solicitors

Ivory, may I suggest that Cousin Hilda offers the following additions to the menu at Ta Chucks: Unicornhorn Soup Hobbitaramasalata Bilbo Baguettes Frodonuts Gollumburgers Smaugasbord Sauronomelette all in ad nauseum sauce ps I think you have been far too gracious with that reprobate, Hitchaiku. He should be banished to the Bike Sheds where his schoolboy humour belongs!
