witty comebacks

Don't you just hate it when you think up the perfect comeback hours after the argument? It happens to me all the time, and it's soooo irritating!

Example: last week had an arguement with a mate's boyfriend (ok, another argument...)

Him: You shouldn't bother coming out if all you're going to do is complain about people

Me: Yeah? Well....Yeah

Of course, later I realised what I should have said was, it never stops you coming out, does it? Does anyone else have this problem?

the worst thing I find is that people expect me to be full of stunning and intelligent repartee, because I'm a writer. They always seem disappointed by my lack of cutting wit.

I find it's often best just to smile nicely and say sweetly "You're probably right."

Typically, the French have a phrase for this (I'll not attempt to add the accents) l'esprit d'escalier (the spirit of the stairs), meaning the feeling you get as you walk down the stairs after an argument having realised exactly what you should have said. It makes me feel better knowing that it happens to a race as sophisticated and relaxed as the French. Kind of like knowing that the Germans have schadenfreude makes me feel better about laughing when a show-jumper falls off their horse, or someone walks into a lampost while talking on their poncey mobile.

I much prefer the feeling I get when shoving someone down the stairs after they have been just a tad too witty for their own good. *tongue planted firmly in cheek in case any lawyers are listening*
