Fruit Pastilles or Fruit Gums?

Which is better

(all say pastilles, the fruit sweet that 9 out of 10 cats prefer)

Dont you just love Cola bottles, milk bottles... all bottles really. Can get Milkshake, Cherry cola as well. All of these come in fizzy and non-fizzy variations. Oh yeah, Ive even see beer flavour, nice too... Ooo, what about those massive snake things... and those jelly sweets which always came in these little packets, one to each although you could get a line of packets. They were always of populart cartoon characters/aliens/insects. Dunno why. SHIRIMPS... and bannana's, and eggs. Love all of those allthough I swear they used to be bigger than they are now. Ive not bought sweets in years. Cor, this brings it all back.

aaarH! you young sprouts don't remember original spangles that had a clear wrapping that you could never get off as it stuck to the sweet. What you had to do was suck them until bits of the wrap dropped off and spit it out. Probably more than you needed to know!

there is a definite difference between gums and pastilles but who care's when you can bite the heads of jelly babies and put the bodies back into the bag and save them for later so as to make them last longer and stop anyone from nicking them (didn't say I wasn't selfish ) all this talk of sweets is not helping me eat my dinner can anyone remember sherbet daps and liquorice laces?

I seem to vaguely remember some sweets that were called "Birds Eggs" which could have been mistaken for small pebbles. I also dimmly recollect sweets with a loop of string through them which you stretched and relaxed to make the sweet spin. More recently kayli was re-invented as Space Dust and Liquorice All Sorts turned Burty (or maybe Burtie) but Wine Gums are in the top three for me, with chocolate oranges and chunky Kitkats.

glad I came back for one last look before I have to skip your right about the birds eggs ... and its true they reminded me more of pebbles you can still get the sweets on the elastic band thing and its Burtie think is best if I stop at this point or else I'll have to go a buy a new wardrope ! mouth watering for liquorice allorts

Pastilles every time. But the best, oh the very best of them all, are smelly gums. That's what we call them. I think they're sold in large bottles at the back of the confectioner's under another name - and they probably aren't sold at all any more. When the missus and I were courting (we were 17 and 16 and it was 1970 and my Mum was courting too so we could do things most kids of our age couldn't get away with) she used to pop them into my mouth in between bed-things and make me guess the colour. I missed every time. Is there a hidden message there? Oh woe is me.

have any of you tried those sweets you buy from (looks around to make sure daughter isn't over looking what I'm writing ) Woolies..... they make you wind your face up as they release they sourness into your mouth not sure what they're called daughter will not longer enter shop with me ... I'm far too embarressing 'cause I go and play with all the toys that make noises ... especially the ones that make very very loud nosies .. you know you have to press the paw and it sings to you and of course I just cannot resist joining in .... have found this works best when younger niece is around ... they start to behave lovely ... shame about me though ... it slightly back fired once when I nearly got banned one christmas thought I'd share this with you .... good for keeping kids in their place if they think you can behave worse than them

Gums - particularly the ones that come in the yellow boxes and are fruit shaped - you only seem to find them in old cinemas and the red ones are pure lovely.

'all' are right. fruit gums, or 'wine gums', as they were known in my day, just get stuck in your teeth. in fact, i understand that it was as a result of eating a particularly tenacious wine gum (that's fruit gum to you, Easty) that Martin Amis had to pay out all that money on his teeth.

wine gums are the work of the devil - pastilles rule! But jelly babies are better than both, and even jelly babies can't quite compare with those opal fruit jooster things. They are scrumplicious!

as I recall (old bloke) proper wine gums used to be different shapes and have words like 'Port' and other wines printed on them. I don't think they still do this. We used to suck em like crazy to try to get drunk. Personally, my favourite was 'Old English Spangles'

Nope, wine gums and fruit gums are different things entirely. We had a massive argument over this very complicated issue and we found that fuit pastilles and fruit gums were about equal but if we added wine gums into the equation then there was no competition as it won hands down. Now jelly babies are another thing entirely and cant be classified with any other sweet. Otherwise it would win everything simply because you can bite their heads off (and their soooo yummy).
