Johnny Depp V Dick Van Dyke..
Dear All
Saw 'From Hell' with Johnny Depp last night.
Quite possibly the worst English accent since Dick Van Dyke in 'Mary Poppins'.
Now, I know all you birds (especially Liana) consider Johnny as decent 'eye candy' but he cannot cut the mustard as an actor in my book.
Ok 'What’s Eating Gilbert Grape' and 'Donnie Brasco' were half decent but that was because craftsman directed them.
What is the worst accent you have ever heard in a film?
Bob Hoskins American accent is suspect as well in my book.
Ralph
Heehee, yeah, I noticed that! I like Spike though, he's funny, definitely not half as bad as Dick Van Dyke though.
Who CARES abt acting when you look like THAT????/
Am rendered speechless and unable to concentrate on *acting ability* when the God Depp is onscreen..........
*swoons...........*
I admire the way that Depp decides which films he wishes to be in, by the amount that the story interests him, rather than the amount of money that he receives (i after e except after c) for the said film.
Of course thats bollocks... hes just incredibly horny. Eh Wolfie?
When you live in the States you occasionally come across American prats who say, "Awrl roit, mite, from England are yer?" and you always reply, "You sound like fucking Dick Van Dyke, you @!#$!"
This thread reminded me of those days.
Vicky...I think Spike is exellent, for an American. But yes, when he says 'poofs' in that elongated way, he gives it all away. How about Daphne's brother in Frasier? DREADFUL. I giggle when I hear things like 'ta-ta for now'. When did you last hear anyone speak like that?

I saw the movie Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas a few years ago. Johnny Depp was playing Hunter S. Thompson. Gawd what an awful performance. It was virtually unwatchable. Now Bill Murray, on the other hand, did a great job portraying Thompson in Where the Buffalo Roam.
Can't say I've seen Depp in anything else, at least nothing I can remember. :)
johnny depp..after ed wood...scissorhands...sleepy hollow...and those cheekbones of his...how could i not adore him? and as for accents. check out eastenders for the beauty and tremulous crispness of the english accent. rather dick van dyke than arthur mullard.
just my opinion but i think it's rather provincial to pour scorn on the colonies attempt at imitating their motherland's tongue..i think they should be encouraged...one day all american actors might sound like lloyd grossman...which would be nice..
jonny can sweet talk dick van dykey to meNYDAY from the confines of my bed......
oops
too drunk
off to bed
Nobody should be allowed to bad-mouth Johnny Depp. There ought to be some sort of law against it.
Oh God, Val Kilmer's "Irish" accent in the Ghost and the Darkness. Oh God. It was horrible, just horrible. I prayed for him to be eaten by the lions and spare me
Wolfie's right. Daphne's brother in frasier has a London accent and hers is from ..... well, somewhere up north. And none of the producers seem to have noticed.
kevin kline is good with accents... French Kiss... and that other film where his wife wants to kill him cause he was cheating on her.... don't remember what it was called...
... was gwenyth paltrow's accent in Sliding Doors good? it sounded good to me but maybe to someone who is british it didnt...?
Oh, nothing beats that Dick van Dyke, Ralph.
Crack up every time I hear it.
Not that I actually watch Mary P on a regular basis, you understand...ahem.
Meryl Streep - now there's a girl who can do accents...
I think the Americans must force people to use bad accents. I remember Michael Crawford in Condor Man being forced to use that ubiqitous American accent they give to most heroes . I think their idea of an English accent comes from a mix of Davy Jones, a touch of Beatlepuddian and Wilfred Hyde White. The Scottish accents are getting better thanks to Billy Connelly & Sean Connery but still owe much to the Irish. I blame it all on the voice coaches ;-)
In defense of Dick Van Dyke he was doing a Victorian chimney sweep accent which can't be easy with all that soot up yer nose ;-)
Um, excuse me, are you talking about Meryl "Ar dingaaars got my baaaby" Streep? One of the WORST Australian accents I've ever heard.
Another bad one at the end of Point Break, just after the surfer dude is paddling into the deadly waves. One of the "Aussie" cops says: "E's gettin' awaaaauuughy". Terrible.
There's a vampire in buffy that's supposed to be from england. He calls everyone poofs.
Terrible. But quite sexy otherwise.
No, I was dead impressed with La Paltrow's accent in that, Nancy.
But then, maybe I've been away from the UK too long...
