Send Valentine's text poems!

They said it would never happen; that people, especially younger people, don’t buy poetry. So this Valentine’s Day we’re trying to buck the trend by offering a choice of specially written poems which you can have texted anonymously to your loved one’s mobile on Valentine’s day.

The poems – by Edwin Morgan, Alan Spence and Tom Leonard among others – and instructions for ordering are here on the Scottish Poetry Library website.

Yes, I know you can write your own – but I’d love to see thousands of people buying these great contemporary poems. (And they're only £1.50 each, which is less than a card.) So send one to the object of your affection - send a dozen, if you’re keeping your options open – and please spread the word to anyone who might be interested…

Its a good idea. There should also be a competition for other peoples Poetry. Thats what i cant stand about scottish poetry you always see the same names and it starts to get a bit drab and boring and whos going to be making all the 1.50s and say they haven't got a mobile. Sorry for being such a cynical twat, it might have been better done by valentine email.

Yes, I agree that it would be great to open it up a bit - in fact I think they've done something like that in Leeds. They set up 'poem points' around the city, where people can receive text poems about specific areas and then send in their own, which get added to the archive of work. I think it's pretty complex to set up and administer, but maybe next year... So are you going to send a Valentine's text poem Stephen?

No i dont think so Alex, which i suppose is a pity being a bit of a poet, but who knows, also Glasgow is european city of Love this year, i suppose you know that. They reckon Saint Valentine was buried in a church in the Gorbals.

Thanks Jeff - I was trying to be too clever there.

btw the 1.50s will go towards covering the cost of running the project - the poets won't be pocketing a fortune...

Yeah cool, and even if they where getting it all so what, Edwin Morgan and co are excellent poets when all is said and done. I'm going to ask someone for a loan of their moby in college this week to send a text, they will probably think oh a text only 2p, cool, needless to say it wont be that cool.

Here's the link, Alex: You've got to enclose the URL in < > You don't need "a href" and so on!
