Actually this is an 'emoticon', a 'smiley icon' is one of those dumb animated little pics so beloved by asylum seekers. You know what I'm referring to? Ok, go look in a mirror.
So emoticons are acceptable because you use them but smileys are dumb animated little pics because uka use them?
If uka didn't use them would they still be dumb or is everything that is used on uka automatically dumb because they choose to have moderated forums?
Is every site that uses moderation dumb or do they need to be moderated WITH smileys to qualify.
Actually what I'm more interested in is this. Is there any substance in the hypothesis that Karen has dumped you? Has the betrothal fallen on hard times? Are you here just to fill your unhappy hours? Is the disco still going? Are you still brainwashing innocent kids?

Bob: Above thread offers historical account of UKA genesis but little else...Where does the bally hate come in ?
*falls over*
Don't bother you two. Apart from Fish, Eddie, Colin and yourselves no one on the thread has a clue about the real origins of the disquiet. I'm not prepared to explain to the unenlightened, and unless any of you are, the thread is to all intents and purposes, dead.

Bob: Well, after a thorough investigation of both sites, abc leads the way in the Tropical asymmetrical thong department...but if its Pin Up Suspender skirts you're after, UKA is streets ahead!

Just back from The Incredibles. Sadly, I found it was less than *incredible*. It was by far the weakest of the Pixar movies to date.
Often I felt like I was watching a video game, particularly during the chase and battle sequences. Last year I watched Finding Nemo and came out thinking how wonderful it was. This one just left me cold. I can't imagine what "the kids" in there made of it as it is largely about the mid-life crisis of a not particularly appealing former super-hero and his (admittedly not unattractive) bendable wife.
I don't see abc featured often at uka that I remember - though it is
probably listed as a link or resource - but a few times I have
seen appeals to 'help ABC' (fund raising, I think, but I am afraid I
didn't read details) or take part in abc activities or rally to
support an interesting and worthwhile abc project, on the
front page of UKA.
Anyway, I don't recall seeing anyone mentioning abc at uka otherwise, let alone hating it - not that I read everything, I must admit, let alone pick up on every stuble sorry subtle nuance.
Personally - not that that's here nor there because it so seldom is - (huh?) I like to look at quite a few sites, and usually/often/sometimes/frequently think abc's exceptedly exceptional, especially if I'm told what a *** I am or something or nothing or other haha no be seasonal hoho; no, but seriously, it's a lot of fun and there are some great debates, imo; it's just not always quite as easy to view the abc work (well, that's what I've found, which proves nothing *abcedic-ukaic sigh*) but heck, doesn't that make it all the more deeply Finlandian? Seems to me abc can sit back Bob Roberts style and have confidence - it doesn't matter what any other site is doing, surely, unless they take up arms?
(and there is some great work posted here, imo, when I *can* find it!)
"Just back from The Incredibles. Sadly, I found it was less than *incredible*. It was by far the weakest of the Pixar movies to date."
Mwah!?? 'Finding Nemo' is the weakest Pixar movie by a country mile - twee, gutless, and sickly - only saved from being a total disaster by the quality of the animation. I didn't think 'The Incredibles' would be much cop either, but to my mind, it puts them back on form.
On ABC versus UKA.
As far as I know, nobody at UKA hates ABC. They're really very different sites. UKA's more a workshop for writers, while ABC's more of a social inclusion project. I don't know what element I'm supposed to play in a social inclusion project, except include myself, and volunteer for various schemes. So I tend to treat ABC like a writer's workshop as well. In this respect, it's slower and less involving than UKA, in my opinion.
But the only real point of contention is the forums - UKA's are moderated, and ABC's aren't. So people whose rants and tantrums lead to their posts getting deleted on the UKA forums come over to ABC to complain bitterlessly, tirelessly and endlessly about it, as well as devoting a significant part of their remaining existence to furthering the anti-UKA campaign.
This has led to people who *were* neutral on the issue, and would still like to be ABC-friendly, looking defiantly anti-ABC when they point out the obvious flaws of ABC's forum system. Like Andorra says, hardly anyone on UKA comments on ABC at all, because it doesn't really concern them.
Depends on your perspective, doesn't it?
The fact that I have a profressed dislike of various ABC-only members and will always defend UKA makes me 'one of the UKA lot', despite the fact that I still submit work on ABC when I can, and support (in principle at least,) Mark and Tony's efforts.
well, anyone can get on to uka - I know because I have introduced
people, and I can always get on without logging in - so it might be worth trying again.
(and passwords are given automatically if you do want to register;
then you can post work, comment, etc)
Some of the forums need a password but most don't.
'Just back from The Incredibles. Sadly, I found it was less than *incredible*. It was by far the weakest of the Pixar movies to date.'
Well, I thought the Incredibles was superb. The visuals were amazing, the script tack-sharp, and there was plenty for adults and children alike. By contrast, their forthcoming movie, 'Cars', looked like a heap of crap.
A lot of the above is untrue. ABC used to be mentioned a lot on UKA and always in a derogatory manner - mainly because the longer serving members of UKA are those who don't like ABC. There were constant sneering references to "the other place" by disaffected souls. (none of which can be seen coz they clear out old posts every now and then).
Apart from George's references to "the asylum", UKA is rarely mentioned here until someone from UKA pops up to tell us off (andorra) or make some other snidey remark - and there have been plenty).
I've said this several times before (and you can check because the posts still exist) that UKA is a useful site for its resources and feedback. I have twice been invited to join (from two different people) and declined. It just isn't for me.
With regard to the history between the two sites it's not fathomable anymore than are women in pmt mode.
I liked the trailer for Cars!
But I didn't enjoy the hokey woolly lamb short. Painfully b-aaaaa-d.
I guess the main problem was I didn't warm to Mr Incredible. In fact, I didn't give a shit about his mid-life crisis. I can't imagine many 7 year olds would either ... ? Parents - prove me wrong.
I really liked the Incredibles.
Nothing against UKA either. I'm a member and post there regularly. I enjoyed the UKA live event in the summer.
There are differences of opinion on some things and some differences of approach but I don't see that as a major problem for either of us and generally I think the bitterness and rancour is probably exagerrated for comic effect.
Andrea's more than welcome to join us in Camden for a cup of tea next time she's over here.
Let's be honest - it's only really Missi, Gardiner and a couple of people whose names I can't remember who actually have a problem with UKA. And the only problem anyone has with ABC (aside from the niggles and technical troubles,) is that Missi, Gardiner and those couple of others hang out here and slag UKA off.
