Copyright infringement?
I have no wish to be alarmist but there appears to be quite a lot of what I assume to be copyright poetry being posted on the discussion boards, and it's occurred to me that maybe it is an infringement of copyright that could possibly cause a problem for the site. Does anybody know whether this is the case or is it ok to post work published elsewhere?
As one of the offenders Mississippi, which I am sure that you've noticed, I wonder if it would constitute © infringement. I would've thought, that as long as the poet is credited (which I believe is always, if not usually the case) then it should be fine. How else do we discuss writing from elsewhere, or review books? Unless of course we put in deeply coded references to that which we refer to.
If I am wrong, then I will stand corrected, but I hope not.
Sharing words, is after all, what this site is part of.
What does anyone else think?
It is a copyright infringement unless you have permission. However, given that in most instances, it is in the form of a recommendation, there is unlikely to be an objection.
What would be more problematic is someone posting in their abctales set, chapters from published works, in order that people can read them for nothing.
The recent posting of the onion poem did contain the whole poem, and thus I wouldn't have to buy the book to have the poem, but on the other hand, it might make me more inclined to buy the book if I liked the poem. If someone had a thread on a specific poet and then posters ended up putting a substantial amount of quotations on the thread, that might cause problems.
