Dare to Become Frozen Franzen?
Wa at the ABCTales had a reason to feel jealous when Jonathan Franzen's acclaimed novel "The Corrections" was selected for Oprah Winfrey's book club.
But Franzen has earned an even rarer distinction: He is the first author to be uninvited to appear on her show.
Would any of us dare to tell Oprah that she has a tendency to pick schmaltzy and one-dimensional books?
How strange.....Just today I bought "Red" Magazine.....(crap I know)....but it happened to have a free book attatched to its plastic sleeve....it wan't till I got it home that I discovered it was also from Oprah's book club.....(I immediately groaned ...) its called "White Oleander" by Janet Fitch.....I am going to start reading it tomorrow..has anyone else read this yet? is it any good?
I am ashamed to admit that I have not read "The Corrections"....I am curious to know what its all aabout....(please excuse my feeble mind)
All I know about Correction, St Judes and Lamberts after reading few chapters is that all three like the name of the village seem very helpless. I like the observation suggesting that the whole affair could be compared to those long holiday weekends where you go home with your American girlfriend and then sit around watching Lamberts' family fight the whole time. You’re embarrassed, offended, bored and claustrophobic—you can’t go anywhere unless they take you, you can do only what they want to do. You’re happy only when it’s over.
I assume it is very much like Oprah's Show. Amateurs pretending to play amateurs.
To me, Fransen is rather colourful now. It took him 9 years to write the story. And then in the middle of his promotion he tells Oprah to get lost ...
