Pop Idol - Unfair on the girls

I didn't mean it to happen, but I'm becoming quietly addicted to Pop Idol. In the same way that I feel guilty about staring voyeuristically (did I spell that right?) at car crashes, I feel the same guilt about turning on to watch that bloke who only has one t-shirt shoot down young people's dreams.

But I have a theory about the whole programme. Take this week, for instance. There were some gorgeous looking young ladies with great voices. The blonde girl was a stunner, had a great smile and a terrific voice. The dark-haired girl fascinated me because I couldn't work out how her boobs stayed in place (while silently praying that they wouldn't), and there was another dark-haired girl who was equally stunning and a great singer too.

However, two blokes won the votes, and in my opinion (and those of some of the panel) didn't deserve to.

So here's my theory. I reckon the whole programme is unfairly weighted on the side of the blokes. My reason for saying this is that more women are liable to vote than men, and a fair proportion of those women are going to vote for the guys.

(The best I've seen to date is Laura, the little coloured girl with the Irish accent. What a smile!).

I must say that i have to agree with you on the voting thing. After watching it on Saturday I was blown away by the standard of the ladies involved and was more than willing to vote for them than the boys. Unfortunately my girlfriend was on the phone at the time. I didn't see the results as I went out saturday night and have only just finished recovering. Well, coming on here is the first stage in my re-emergence into the world of weekdays. So, who got through? Did the Geordie get through? What about fat bloke and the 'mighty' Darius? My mind is spinning over with anticipation.

The fat bloke and the Geordie got through. Neither of them the best looking males of the bunch, so I'm not so sure about Karl's theory.

Errmm, Karl. Aren't young women more likely to pay good money to buy records by this sort of group ? If you're choosing a pop star to invest in, you want one that girls will vote for. Gareth will win if it is a fair vote, Rick if it is sabotaged by students being 'ironic'. I think the premise is a bit flawed myself - Popstars proved what we all knew was true, that with a hairstyle and some songs, anyone who can sing a bit can fit into a "Boyband"/Steps model band. But solo artists ? Who is successful as a solo singer these days? Mel B couldn't make it - even with a built-in audience and celebrity and credible writing partners. Gary Barlow with a built-in audience and songwriting awards under his arm couldn't. The jury is still out on Victoria Beckham, and we all know how good her publicity machine is. Kylie has been hit and miss, losing a lot of record deals (and money) before Spinning Around - and her last album still lost money. Aguilera is washed up, Britney is now charting at no 7 and looking happy about it. So that leaves Craig David (who has talent, whatever you think of him), Robbie Williams and Geri the publicity machine. I just don't think someone off the telly is going to cut it on their own. (I'm too old to care this much about pop, surely ?)

Sounds like you're discussing British female vocalist ratings being influenced negatively by female viewers who prefer boys. Have I got that right or have I been misled? Can't tell here in Texas. Got enough trouble with cows. In any case, you can't allow the men to dominate again. If you want to know why, read my article: "On the Effrontery of Wonder Women" posted in scifantastic.tripod.com

I think there are far too many girls with average talent in the music world.....I say "Bring on the men!" (talented or not) heeheee....

I think you are right linsi and I will stick my neck out here and disagree with Karl. I have seen about 60% of this programme and all the females seem to fall into the catagory that Linsi mentions. They are good but not good enough. They all sound the same. Yes, they look good but none of the ones I saw this week 'performed'. The train driver was easily the best (despite his double time jigging) and the fat bloke has a great voice. Many of the men seem to be able to actually project their individual voices and personalities out whereas the Ladies seem so bland. Is gareth the kid with the stutter Andrew? I remember seeing him the first time he performed. I was mightily impressed but I know none of you will believe me when I say that I forecast that he will win the thing all those weeks ago. Anyway. I don't watch rubbish such as this. Nor Blind Date. did you see that couple really slagging each other? feisty stuff!

Blind date! What of load of pish! Yes, I did see that couple slagging each other off...I wasn't really watching it though, just switched to the wrong channel by mistake....(seem to do that every saturday for some reason) I remember the days when Blind date would be back ground noise while I was getting ready to go out for a two-day beer binge with me mates......How sad it is that now it is the focal point to my nondescript weekends. That and an electronic chess board.......(sobs into laced hanky) I never used to watch the T.V and yet, here I am! Did anyone see Eastenders tonight?

Cripes - that Laura girl (the Irish one) couldn't sing for toffee. Just shows you, it's either about the voices or the looks. Well, she was pretty. Unfair on the girls? This must only be cos you're a bloke, but it's halfy halfy ain't it? 5 guys 5 girls. Sounds fair to me.
