The problem with some genres like sci-fi is that some of the best was done from the 1930's through the 1960's. Edegar Rice Burroughs did a ton of stuff. Look at Buck Rodgers an Flash Gorden for surreal landscapes. "Skylark" from the thirties is one of the best. Same with films..I have a lot of history of knowldge etc..."Fantastick Planet" from the 1970's...I have snooped old books for years. There is a lot of general nothing out there in paperback. DAW and Del Ray etc did publish a lot of good stories...It helps to find someone that knows the really good stuf. All the original "Conan" stuff is fantastic for scene description etc...I can make a list and send it in a few days of some of the better stuff...
Try, Before: Babel in the stars/Ends:Babel in the stars It's quite a colourful one by Sebastian.
Some SCI FI reccomendations from me are:
The "Fabulous Riverboat" series, by Jose F Farmer
The "Golden Torc", by Julian May
Anything by E E Doc Smith, especially the "Lensman Series"
They are all older sci fi, but IMHO they are classics
I think we have moved away slightly from answering Kiko Korea's question, namely recommendations of work on THIS site.
Like adharanand I hesitate to recommend my own work but I have posted two that I would love you to read, Kiko, and then maybe comment on if you have the time. These are "Bottom Feeders" (the only story I've posted that hasn't been cherried but I like it) and "Oracle at the Adelphi". On another thread we've been saying that ABC should have a "Supernatural" category. It doesn't at the moment so ghost stories have to go in as "Horror". Maybe we need more categories. "Surreal" would be quite a good one too.
Well since everyones recommending there own work i don't think i would come across a pompous by doing the same.
'Morality Of a Gene Engineer' or the edited version 'Casualty' are both sci_fi and I'd apreciate your comments. 'Caramel Cut' is a very surreal modern fable on the dangers of smoking, although I try not to ne too judgemental or moralistic, maybe you could tell me if I have been.
What I've read of Funky Seagull is pretty great...
Try 'Counting Down' by Marcus - easily of publishable standard IMHO. I wonder if he tried selling it to Interzone or something like that?
I probably shouldn't be recommending my own story, but it is pretty surreal (although not very sci-fi). It's called The Closet Caretaker. I also read one about a Scottish zebra, which was good, but I don't remember what it was called.
