Man, I just live for this sort of stuff - Victorian reading book for children, filled with dread, unmanageable fears and violence - and some lovely illustration to boot. If I was an eccentric millionaire, I would so collect this type of book. This one even puts Stuwelpelter to shame.

Just reread the story of Little Black Sambo, with his mother Black Mumbo and his father Black Jumbo. Despite the fact that they are clearly Africans, LBS has an encounter with tigers who are turned into ghee to make pancakes with. Can you imagine this being published today??

ive got that book.. dont they run round a tree and thats how the tiger turns to ghee?
i always wanted those pancakes...
