'Nother one from sprog:
'Everytime you go away, you take a piece of meat with you' (Paul Young)
He seems to have an obsession with all things fleshy...at his age, too!
Once lent Automatic for the People to a mate - his comments, "bit gloomy, but liked that song about going to the West Indies"
andrew - what ?
mate - Come to Jam-ai-ca, come to Jam-ai-ca.
It IS young girl with eyes like potatoes - from the weakest Madonna single since Gambler (50% of whose lyrics are "I'm a gambler")
And of course the Jimi Hendrix classic - "Excuse me, while I kiss this guy"
grrrrr...no sooner get the bloody belle stars song out of my head and he mentions that Gonna Write a Classic song!
this is getting dangerous. i went for what seemed like a decade with a bloke called F R David camped in my brain singing the first verse to his hit single Words. eventually it was edged out by an even worse song, or at least its chorus, that went "take me down to new york city, where the grass is green and the girls are pretty"
aaaargh the voices!
There was an awful song in late Eighties, early nineties that went
"Young Man you're too girly girly" and we used to sing the next line as "You couldn't eat a curly-wurly" which was far better than the original which was eminently forgettable. So much so, that I've forgotten it!
Ok, here's my favourite misheard lyric and it comes from my mate Kathryn who as a child sang the following ..
'Dance, dance, whever you may be
I am the Lord of the dance settee'
Isn't that great!
And my god... 3,6,9 takes me back to my sister and I sitting in a room listening to mum and dad's 7inch (the type with the middle bit missing) version of that crackling away. Definately pre- 1982.
My favourite misheard lyric comes from Stones Roses:
I sang ans still do sing "I want to be a dog" instead of what I think, but am not sure should be "I want to be adored"
But then again i think my words are better.
"tonight I sellotape my glove to you."
(celebrate my love for you)
Also as a child I though the line,"she got the Mercedes Benz," in Hotel California was "the mercedez bends," meaning she had got out too quick. I though it was very clever, now i think i over complicate things and obviously always have.
Sorry if I've got this all wrong but is this 'Come to Jamaica' thing an R.E.M. lyric. If so, I've always thought that's exactly what it was saying. When I ask my kids what it really is (they're R.E.M. meisters) they just fall about laughing but won't give me a straight answer. So put me out of my misery anyone who knows. What is the R.E.M. lyric that sounds like 'Come to Jamaica'?
Also (my kids again) what is the Nirvana lyric that just sounds like Kurt Cobain screaming 'Burn the House Down. Marijuana'? Maybe that's exactly what it is.
Help, please.
Nirvana Lyric - Kurt actually sings: A mulatto, An albino, A mosquito, My Libido......Now..isnt your interpretation much clearer? :o)
As for the REM one, its: Call me when you try to wake her up. Call me when you try to wake her.
The song is called The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonite.
I love this thread. Makes me larf.
there's a police song called, So Lonely, which can be sung as Sue Lawley, or Salami...
and what was that Billy Ocean thing, When the go and get stuffed...
and why was elvis costello singing about tyres? What a Goodyear for the roses...
and wasn't there something form Flashdance ... take your pants down and make it happen ??
While we're doing music, today's bugging-Andrew question is :-
Who sang that song that goes 'Two-six nine, the goose drank wine, the monkey chewed tobacco on the way to Caroline, the line broke, the monkey got choked and they all went to heaven in a little row boat ?'
One of those that just pops into my head every now and then.
I'm sure the only reason I listen to so much music is because the default setting in my head is Rene and Renata 'Save your love my darling, save your love'.
And as this is Liana's thread - no, you aren't scary.
It definitely was a group of girls, because the chorus is 'my auntie told me, if I was goodie, that she would buy me, a little dolly - my uncle told her, I kissed a soldier, now she won't buy me, a little dolly'
(It is possibly rubber dolly not little dolly, but maybe I am still thinking about Inflatable Date)
The other one that often bugs me is "Aiko-Aiko ay-ay"
Gawd, I remember that one too, Andrew (showing our ages here). Wasn't the 'All Stars' though, pretty sure of that. Definitely American. Ronnettes (two 'n's?) or something?
Good one Neil,
I went to see John Fogerty from (Creedence Clearwater Revival) a couple of weeks ago in Denver... One of his songs..."Bad Moon Rising", he has a very well known phrase in the song....
"...There's a Bad Moon on the Rise."
So, during the concert, he sings this song, and say's...
"...There's a Bathroom on the Right." As he points to the porta-pots in the parking lot...
I read an afterwards, an interview he did for the Denver Post, where he does that on purpose because for 30 years, everyone has misunderstood what the lyrics were. Now he makes a point to make fun of his own lyrics in concert.
I remember a 60’s reggae song that sounded like “Wake up in the morning... baked beans for breakfast”
I think it was called Israelites and was performed by Desmond Decker.
I’m still not sure what the correct lyrics were
Okay, I think the best song for misheard lyrics is "Blinded by the Light" by Manford Man. You can't understand at least half of what is being sung. ;o)
There is a website that features misheard lyrics. It's at www.kissthisguy.com "Kiss this guy" being the most common misheard lyric from Jimi Hendrix - what he was saying was (as has been mentioned in this thread) 'kiss the sky'.
there's a great site called kissthisguydotcom.
just thought i'd be the 4th to say it. first recommended by a gibbon in another thread which lead to this one being started.
it was manFRED man btw.
the calliope crashed to the ground etc
Mykle, there was an advert on televsion a good few years ago feturing that song, and the chorus misheard lyrics to Desmond Decker's The Israelites was "oh, oh, my ears are alight"...Does anyone else remember that ad? I can't remember what they were advertising though......
Thanks again Liana.
The only thing is now i've got the Nirvana thing sorted my wayward son has just come home with a CD by someone called 'Insane Clown Posse.' Needless to say I haven't even heard of them. Something tells me that a group with such a dodgy name are sure to have some equally dodgy lyrics. So watch this space.
Also, regarding the best lyrics my own favourite is the brilliant Bob Dylan put-down from Positively 4th Street which goes:
I wish that for just one time
You could stand inside my shoes
And just for that one monent
I could be you
Yes I wish that for just one time
You could stand inside my shoes
You'd know what a drag it is
To see you
By the way I'm too old to know much about Nirvana and REM but I can definitely confirm The Clapping Song was Shirley Ellis.
Pioden, there was an advert for Vitalite spread done to that song - but I think there waa another one I was thinking about - something do with mishearing things - maybe an ad for hearing aids???!! (only joking - but I do seem to remember there were two ads at least using that Desmond Decker tune).
Si, it's "I'll stir-fry you in my wok" and the best Beastie Boys lyric is "I'm the king of Boggle/there is none higher/scored eleven points for the word Quagmire"
And everyone - it was the Belle Stars I was thinking of - so whoever did the original is probably nobody we've ever heard of.
