Hey - issa me!

Hello everybody. I'm back home for the week and have net access. Hope relations on the site are as lively and acrimonious as ever. I've missed the support and atmosphere of abctales since I've been gone... *sniff*.
Incidentally, aive I have a big ask. I've burrowed my way pretty deep into writing a fantasy novel that's going to consitute my dissertation next year (and probably stimulate my first barrage of rejection slips!). I know sod all about the industry. I would be really gratefully if any of you who might have advice about how I might start trawling for an agent or - even better - would be prepared to have a squiz at some of my work in exchange for counter-critiquing of whatever you have to offer (via email) I'd be really grateful. Anyway, if anyone would be prepared to feedback or - having read some of my stuff online - would be prepared to enter into email correspondence with me, you might just spur a naive young writer on to his first publication!
But aside from all this blatant self-servingness, I sincerely hope all the familiar writers from the site are as happy and beligerent as ever.

Hello Tim, novel eh? Oh well aren't we clever. Bring some down to Wales with you so I can tell you why it'll never sell. I've been down the beach today, it was lush. Looking forward to seeing you... Joe

I think I'm going to stick a few chapters up, Stephen, just to get some outside feedback. I don't really know if there's a market for what I'm writing, but the poorer I get, the more I feel I ought to be hassling agents and somehow making the whole creativity thing pay. Spack, as always you have crushed my spirit. Curse you and your razor-sharp wit.

I was in Norwich today, thought of you lot as I strolled by the river (all those riverside pubs are a bit poncy arent they?)

Whoops - sorry Andrea. Didn't mean to neglect you. Yes, thank you, the links look really useful. I've been struggling to come up with a 500 word synopsis of the book; it's a bit of a sticking point. I've read that you should provide examples of other books or authors that your work is similar to in order to help the agent/publisher get a feel for what sort of market the novel can be aimed towards. This has been a sticking point, and I'm still struggling. I have no idea if I sound like anyone! I'm sure I'm not alone in feeling a little naive and sheepish when it comes to what to do or who to speak to within the whole publishing industry. Part of me feels like: who do I think I am to presume the fruits of my passtime are actually worth paying for? But then, nothing ventured... Liana, yup, the pubs in the Riverside are tacky towny pubs. And I used to work at the bowling alley right in the middle of them! ^_^

hi Tim, I'd be happy to read some of your stuff and let u know what I think. Regards, Drew. re the synopsis, I always do very brief chapter summaries. It's easier and u can usually slip in a few cliffhangers to make it more exciting. obviously with the publishers find one that publishes the kind of stuff you're doing - go to a book shop and make a list of publishers who do fantasy novels. prepare for a long wait - my book took 2 years from the time I sent it off to the time it came out. that's normal as publishers plan at least a year ahead.
