I met IDS briefly about 22 years ago when we were both serving in the Scots Guards in Rhodesia on the Mozambique border. In those days he was the ADC to General Sir John Ackland.
One incident I recall concerned the MTA-4644 machine gun, a fairly lethal twin-barelled, magazine-fed, automatic that could deliver up to 10 bullets a second.
Unfortunately these weapons had a tendency to jam, so IDS was detailed to round them all up and test them one by one. I was given the job of firing each harmlessly into the air while he made notes.
What should have been a straightforward task was made five times worse by his concerns about safety. Every time he heard helicopters approaching he wanted me to stop firing in case I hit one.
Eventually I lost my rag and just opened fire at the next batch of helicopters bringing about four of them down in a blaze of flame. When IDS protested I turned the gun on him and shot him about 25 times.
That incident aside, I still have a lot of respect for the man and feel his party has not treated him fairly. If he can survive the plotting, I believe he could yet make a decent PM.
