Tony Capstick

Whilst we're on the topic of comics, Tony Capstick died yesterday. He used to be hilarious back in the days when he did folk clubs. I knew him slightly through his appearances at clubs I frequented in the early 70's. He ALWAYS got pissed as a newt and would then fall apart as he jumped on tables and then fell off them, frequently so inebriated he forgot what song he was singing . He was sacked by a radio station up north I seem to remember, for some outrageous behaviour, but ended up spending 30yrs on Sheffield radio and making cameo appearances in Coronation St and Last Of The Summer Wine. I guess his alcoholism finally got the better of him though it didn't say exactly what he died from. He was the same age as me which is a sobering reminder of my own mortality.

He was a folkie who made the jump to Radio and TV, but was never a raging talent.

Tony Capstick was sacked from BBC Radio Sheffield earlier this year. There was an outcry about it in the Sheffield Star but to no avail... they said he was behind the times, couldn't cut the mustard and all that. I used to listen to him and Rony Robinson on my way to and from work. I liked Tony, he was a proper old Northern bloke, knew loads about music and had a real rapport with the listeners who phoned in. I was disgusted when they sacked him. There are rumours that he committed suicide. Media life is so fickle.
