I'm not flagging this because the author is from New Orleans, my hometown, but rather because I think this is a very well told story. I'm not as thrilled with the subject, a writer/teacher and his journey toward publication ' why is it that writers can't resist writing about writers? I'm guilty as well. But the language and flow, the tone ' kind of reminds me of Walker Percy - I thought were excellent. I'm not sure if this is the first part of a novel or just a stand alone short story ' it's written as though it's part of something larger ' that'd be nice. A really good read.

So welcome to ABC. There are a lot of great writers here ' happy reading.

also: spacing between paragraphs would be nice...

Thanks, Foster, for the generous comments. "Success" is an excerpt from chapter 2 of The Camellia City. I think of the book as a comic novel about redemption. And it has some things to say about the writing life and publishing. For example, note how Morgan achieves his success.
