Blindness and The Road

Not sure if anyone has seen the commercials for Blindness yet, but it looks to be a truly astounding translation of the Nobel Prize Winner Jose Saramago's work. Directed by the man behind City of God and The Constant Gardner. Stars Julliane Moore, Danny Glover, and Mark Ruffalo. keep an eye out for this one.

Next comes The Road, Cormac McCarthy's heartwrenching Pulitzer winning masterpiece, possibly the best book I've ever read, which is being adapted by Ridley Scott (Aliens, Gladiator, American Gangster, Blade Runner) Stars Viggo Mortensen.

anyone else as excited as I am for these upcoming films? (not to exclude Body of Lies, Quantom of Solace, Defiance, and Coen Bro's Burn After Reading other upcoming potentials)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dgY7HuWsmKQ I love Blindness the book, and am a little concerned about Blindness the film. It's had quite poor reviews (at least the ones I've seen). What I would hate is for a bad film to be someone's introduction to such a wonderful author. I've got to say, the trailer doesn't look quite right to me. Open mind, though. I remember going to watch Atomised on my own. I'm a big fan of Houellebecq and I distinctly recall feeling anxious as the film started. I so wanted to enjoy it. And I wasn't disappointed. I thought it was great. Possibilities of an Island, the new one that he directs, has had some of the worst reviews I've ever read. Apparently critics walked out of a screening laughing at how bad it is. I imagine I'll watch it. And, like Blindness, no matter how good or otherwise it is, I will try to find positives... Now, what about Watchmen. Eh? Eh? It's got Rorschach, kids! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E4blSrZvPhU YEAH! Enzo.. www.thedevilbetweenus.com
So there's a movie of Possibilities of an Island. I must look for the reviews. What a bleak book that is. I like Houellebecq because he goes where others don't but he's far from being a great writer. Clever man but maybe too clever. I liked Platform best of all his books...it seemed to suggest a way out of his dilemma. But it was only temporary. Just found this... http://www.guardian.co.uk/film/2008/aug/12/france
"Possibilities of an Island, the new one that he directs, has had some of the worst reviews I've ever read. Apparently critics walked out of a screening laughing at how bad it is." Yeah, the piece in The Guardian made it sound hilarious. Not surprised, though. You get the impression that Houellebecq possibly doesn't see the same things in his books as readers do, including readers who really like them.

I get the impression MH likes to stir things up just for the sake of it. That probably doesn't translate well to the screen.

Generally I'd imagine that's true. But I really did enjoy Atomised. Moritz Bleibtreu (who's been in just about every German film I've ever seen) gives a great performance as Bruno. It's well worth seeing
I must try to find a copy Enzo. Talking of MH it always occurs to me that he is in some kind of French provocative (?) literature tradition. I'm thinking of writers like Camus and Celine.
