I've just read Ambitious Mirrors by Andrew Pack, not sure quite how I managed to miss it in the past.
It's a remarkable tale, and well worth a read.
I could practically hear "Tales of the Unexpected" theme music playing when l got to the end - Andrew Dahl has arrived.

I'd settle for looking like Audrey Hepburn and writing like Pat Barker (I know they are not related - I'm widening it a little)

... for those interested andrew looks more like sophie than roald ... (however he looks hardly anything at all like sophie ...)
