remarkable shrimps

Whilst attempting to read an academic paper on "The Politics of Changing Men" this evening I noticed that there was a fascinating orange octopus floating about on the TV screen. This apparition distracted me from my reading. I watched it for a moment or two and then the scene (from "The Abyss:Live") cut to a boffin excitedly describing the deep sea Shrimp.

These shrimps start life as male shrimps, then later change into female shrimps, reproduce (or whatever they call it in deep sea language) and die.

The explanation was that the shrimps are very relaxed and lazy when they are male so they live for ages as males but then, when they become female (???????!!) they use up so much energy reproducing that they DIE.

Wow!

Changing Shrimps. Is there something we're missing here?.....

Changing shrimps? was there a poor, confused male shrimp with his eyes closed and a camera pointed at his now bulging belly and lack of any kind of tackle? At his side Lawrence Lewellyn Bowen in breathing apparatus and frilly wet suit says "now open your eyes" Its no wonder they die soon after they change sex, most men would just grope themselves to death.

It's a shame that we always talk so much about the differences between males and females; we are all very similar and were the same sex in the womb at one point, if I remember my sex education correctly. Men even have nipples; I experienced astonishment and faint disgust when I discovered that mine could be stimulated and made erect. Perhaps all this men v women lark is biological: we have to compete with each other for the good of the species and emphasize the few essential differences between us that there are. Men who tend to the feminine or women to the masculine are ridiculed because they challenge the accepted definition of the sexes, as exaggerated in adverts. The sexes grow more similar as they grow older. For example, I used to think prawn cocktails were sissy, but now I like them. d.beswetherick.
