This is good, sharp. I get the feeling that I have read this writers work before, but it says that it is the only piece on here. Anyway, I thought it was good, as I said. A bit Nell Dunn, with some hint of violent undertones - the view into the kitchen was fantastic.

i think it is good ... but i almost feel the style gets in the way somehow ... perhaps it is that world weariness ... i always feel a slight alarm bell when i actually notice the style of something ... if it seems self aware in any way as writing if you see what i mean ... do you? i don't wish to detract from someone who is obviously a good writer ... but too easily good ... hmmm
it does have a distinct voice but i didn't find it overly stylised. Its a dark slice of life, with an inevitable and rather distasteful conclusion. I guess beggars and writers can't be choosers. Juliet

I think that the style makes the events themselves more interesting, but it in some way it leaves you wanting. The short curt use in discussion was very good with the land lady.
Actually, although the ending is inevitable, the writing is at least fresh, which is in itself a treat. Reminded me less of Nell Dunn, more of Pat Barker, in Union Street. Been bugging me what it is, now I know.
http://www.abctales.com/story/alan_benefit/the-den I liked this too - I know it's in Snipers thread, but the visuals for me are quite similar. Loach film, this. Not sure how it slipped through the net.
