Fortune telling

I am in the process of writing a short story about a man who visits a fortune reader. Several years ago, I was a bit obsessed with this unexplained phenomnia and visited a few myself.
In order to create any real atmosphere in the story,(I can't quite remember what the experinece was like) I am going to see a lady and have my fortune told.

Before, I would not have thought twice about going, but something just doesn't feel right?
Am I just being silly and worrying over nothing, or is something bad about to happen (Half of me wants the latter as It would help my story!)
I was wandering what your views on this sort of thing are, I know that the Bible objects to fortune telling but thats not what is bothering me...

I used to be really into the strange and unexplained, whats happened to me?

P.s I am not worried about her telling me I will die, I already had that disclosed to me five years ago.

Ah, but will she know that you are just there on research? And if she doesnt, is she crap? Ask Fish about the fortune teller poem that she has on her pc archives somewhere....excellent stuff.

I recently had my handwriting analysed for a women's magazine - was nervous as hell about it but it came back saying I was ace so obviously, it's entirely accurate ;-) Strongly recommend you read 'Lucy Sullivan is Getting Married' - brilliant trashy novel centred around a visit to a fortune teller (ideal for Sunday afternoon's in the bath with fag in one hand and glass of wine in the other) I reckon if it doesn't feel right, don't do it - gut instinct is a good thing -listen to it. Since I started listening to my gut instinct, I've been way happier and had way less horrid things happen (and had just as much fun) It's not a morality thing (although Ouji boards scare me senseless) But if you feel disturbed about something and you wouldn't normally, there may well be a reason... *end of hippy mode* :-)

Perhaps they were trying to sell you a magazine subscription?:))) For many years a handwriting analysis company in the US has been advertising in the little Sunday newpaper magazines that contain the weeks TV listings. So back in the late 70s I sent them a sample as requested and I think something like 5 dollars for a preliminary analysis. It is a classic "puppy dog sale" technique: give them something and then sell them something (a full analysis at a much higher price). Anyway, I figured it was worth 5 dollars just to see what happened. Well, the results came in telling me that I was a highly disturbed person who should seek professional help immediately, and don't bother ordering the full analysis, it will say the same thing, thank you very much, and good luck. It was not necessary to go to a fortune teller after than, though I was dating a Ukrainian girl at the time, which can be much the same thing.

Hi Linsi Its the future that is the strange and unexplained.. however we do have some modicum of choices to influence it.. even if its choosing to go to a fortune teller! regards, 1leg

Linsi The only thing I have against Fortune Telling of any description is it spoils the innocence of your experience. The fact that you are nervous about going illustrates this point.

My Mother grew up in Apartheid South Africa (She is Cape coloured) where she was treated , alongside all other Blacks as a second class citizen. My Mother grew up in Apartheid South Africa (She is Cape coloured) where she was treated , alongside all other Blacks as a second class citizen. She never spoke to white people and rarely saw them as housing areas, schools etc were segregated. When she was about seven she went to the local spiritualist who told her that one day she would marry a white man. When she went and told her friends they of course fell about themselves laughing, it was as unlikely a prediction as myself marrying an alien (ok not quite). But a series of unplanned events meant she came to live in England aged 13 and married my father - yes, a white man. Of course this and many other predictions can be explained as coincidence. Think about how many opportunities there are for freaky things to be present in your life and they aren't. Its just that when does happen we notice them. Its like winning the lottery - you don't think about all the other tickets you bought that didn't win. However, we only understand things in our universe in terms of time. There may be (May the God of Science forgive this blasphemy) a being or beings external to the universe operating outside time who see our past present and future as a seamless whole. Would it not be possible for it/ them to intervene in our world? Being a theist, I believe in providence -that a deity directly participates in my world. Why would he not have an army of helpers (we might call them angels) to communicate with us. I personally had an experience some years ago where angels filled my world with so many co-incidences and messages that I decided I was undergoing either a spiritual or psychotic experience. (I don't believe I'm psychotic!) Anyway, I'm going off the point but now I've established that these forces may exist, the next stage is to examine the claim that mediums/ fortune tellers make that they have a direct or indirect communication with these extra-universal beings/ forces or whatever they are. We can safely assume that some of them will no and will be ripping you for cash, but there are also some who genuinely believe they are in touch. I don't think we can ever know if this is truth. Perhaps these people are extremely intuitive and perceptive to other human beings. (e.g. I know a woman who was told by a fortune teller she was pregnant before she even knew herself and this could be sensed by tactile olfactory signals due to hormonal change) If this is the case a consultation with such a person can only be beneficial. Either way - don't take it too seriously. We are on this side of time and can shape our own destiny.

Linsi, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was a great believer in the "sprititual world," using seances to contact the dead, etc etc. If you havent already, maybe you should read some of his stories along those lines. He was also the unwitting victim of a few huge scams because of his beliefs. On the other hand, my father often told me I was going to come to no good one day, and he was right, so maybe there's something to it.

Have you tried going to a reputable Tarot reader, instead of a run-of-the-mill fairground fortune teller?

Linsi, The Bible is absolutely full of fortune telling. They call it "prophesy" but it amounts to the same thing (sorry Mark). I've visited several psychics over the years and used to have a buddy who was extraordinarily gifted. He's passed on now, but several things he told me about have now come to pass. He would even know what I was thinking at times. I, myself, have studied numerology, and have found it to be the most accurate of that group which consists of horoscopes etc. It would help sometimes to understand why a client was going through a tough time and when it would end. However, if you feel apprehensive, don't go. It's not because you're going to learn anything bad, it's because the person you're going to visit is crap and at a deep, subliminal level you've picked on that.

Maybe if your nervous about going to see a fortune teller. You could set the story in another time or place. Like in the past, or in the future. Then imagine what it would be like. I don't believe it's possible to ever no the future for certain. The future is always changing. Like now: me typing this message is changing the future in some small way. Everyday we make choices and create different tommorrows. You can never be certain of anything. I believe a lot of stuff like tarot and horoscopes and fortune-tellers, is to do with self-fullfilling prophecy. We hear what the fortune teller has to say. And we start thinking about it and wondering about it. Some of us even believing it. And it's fun to do this as well, cause life can be mundane at times and we all need something magical to spice the world up a bit. That's what feels like is missing from our lives: the magical. It's all just plastic, concrete, polluted toxic moneylove vibes. Where's the wonder in that? So I guess at times we need some kind of a magical fix. Anyway some people forget about what the fortune teller said and carry on living their lives. Some people don't forget about what the fortune teller said and because they think about it so much: they unconsciously bring that reality into their lives. We all make our own futures and are not at the mercy of any fate or higher spiritual powers or whatever. We are masters of our own destiny and we can all do what the hell we like. We are the one's who make the choices and noone or nothing else makes those choices for us. But they can do if we let them, but then we choose to do what they tell us. To accept the futures they present us, but we choose to do this. We are always choosing. Nobody has any power over you unless you let them. I mean right now I could choose to pick up my computer and throw it through my window. Then get on my bike and travel to Japan. If I did something crazy like that then I would be creating a whole new future for myself. But I don't do that because I choose to stay here, cause it's cold outside and warm in here. But maybe oneday I will do that. I'am free to do it anytime I want to. Free-choice can be a hard thing to come to terms with because it puts the steering wheel of life into your hand; and you have to take responsibilty for your actions. It's about becoming a warrior. Anyway Linsi hehe... didn't mean to write you an essay on the matter. These are only my thoughts. But you have nothing to be afraid of. Be a warrior! If a fortune teller tells you such and such is going to happen to you, and you don't want that to happen to you, then you can choose not to have that future. But if he/she says lots of cool things are gonna happen, then believe in it. The only way that any future is gonna happen is if you believe that is what will happen for you. Not saying this is fact, but it's how I see it anyway. I would rather think of myself as a warrior who chooses his own destiny; than a being who is constantly at the mercy of fate and all that scary stuff. I hope this gives you some inspiration for your story.
