Vanilla Sky..
Dear All
I saw Vanilla Sky last night.
I hated it because it tried to make the audiance feel stupid.
It failed on so many counts.
Too many cooks I think.
Penny Cruz was beautiful though.

I'm discussted!
Didn't see it, so can't disgust, sorry.....
Ralph - I thought your opinion was interesting - that was one of the reasons I thought the film was a worthwhile thing, because it was something that was going to polarise opinions. I'm still not able to say whether or not I liked it, a week on, which is unusual because I'm a pretty opinionated guy.
Cruz is not my physical type and I don't really like wide-eyed naive women - she strikes me as the Madeleine Basset type from Bertie Wooster - "the sort of girl who would come down to breakfast, put her hands over her husband's eyes and say guess who. Every single day"
And you're right about the sense of panic in Memento - it was so disorienting early on, before you twig how the chronology works, really plunging us into the character's world. If you can't make new memories then the order of events becomes less and less important. My particular favourite bit was "What I'm I doing ? Oh, I'm chasing this guy... No, he's chasing me"
first of all... i dont understand the hype about penelope cruz... she's not that amazing
as for the movie... i just saw it 2 days ago and i didnt like it cause i spent half the time i was watching it trying to figure out what the hell was going on...
and to conclue... i have no idea what the hell was going on...
Ralph, I thought Penelope Cruz was dreadful, cloying and wooden. The film clearly needed the audience to fall in love with her, but I don't like women that are false and pretend to be childlike.
I came out unsure as to whether I'd liked it, but certain that it had been worth the time and money I'd spent. Nice to see a film that doesn't treat the audience like idiots. Weird that you felt it was trying to make people feel stupid - I thought it was crediting the audience with far more intelligence than usual. I'm so sick of going to films and being able to think in the first ten minutes, "Oh, this is the twist they're going to use" - instead, I had no idea what was going on and was able to lose myself in the story. (Also amusing that some "Days of Thunder"-era Cruise fan in the audience at my cinema said loudly "Well, I lost the plot about an hour ago")
I had the feeling that the ending wasn't going to be satisfactory and resolve things properly and it didn't, quite, but it was a good stab at it.
Cruise actually showed a bit of vulnerability. Diaz was excellent as always and the soundtrack was magnificent.
Watched Memento this week and that was better, a breathtaking bit of cinema.

I did not say Penelope was good, just beautiful.
I hated it for all the reasons that you admired it.
You are right 'Memento' is a far superior film that created panic in the viewer.
I thought Vanilla Sky created apathy
Just my opinion
Ralph
What's Vanilla sky?
Who is Penelope Cruz?
Is my life really so naive? Will I ever escape my blanket of cotton wool?
