Anti America
Does anyone know any great ANTI American lit . It has to be good flag burning stuff , preferably written from the 1950's onwards and not TOO political .
I think Anti is probably too strong a word, but James Ellroy has written a lot of books that take a look under the American Dream and don't think much to what's there - most set in the fifties. Try the Black Dahlia (if you have a strong stomach) or American Tabloid, which kicks off with "America was never innocent, we lost our cherry on the boat over and never looked back" and by chapter one has the line "He always liked to shoot up by the light of the TV" - corruption, greed, fear, betrayal, self-preservation and self-aggrandisement of individuals being the driving force of history. An interesting read.
Non-fiction, Naomi Klein's "No Logo" is interesting, though it gets over-simplistic and naive towards the end. Some of the observations about Nike in particular are compelling and shocking.
LOL!!!
Ollie is it? The only Ollie I know who is still alive is Oliver North of Iran-Contra fame. You won't find any anti-American stuff on his web site, though.:))
Your question frankly strikes me a hilarious because the real question should be, "does anyone know of any literature of the past 50 years which is NOT anti-American?" Seriously, you are diving into the largest literary lake ever constructed.
Still, you might try The Ugly American. It was a movie starring Marlon Brando. I honestly don't know if it was a novel first, though. I believe it was set in Thailand. The phrase "the ugly American" is still in common usage and every American has heard it and knows what it means, even if they've never heard of the movie.
If you could narrow the field a little, I could probably help.
Ellroy's books are great, especially American Tabloid, but I would never describe them as anti-American. They are an uncompromising look at a certain aspect of the American spirit. I personally think Ellroy rather likes the seedy side of things, at least from a little distance.
