Why do people loathe journalists

Why does the term "the scum of the Earth" tend to come up when thinking of journalists? Is it because laws (eg, s.3 Sexual Offences Act 1976) had to be passed banning the press from identifying (and so humiliating) child abuse/rape victims, something they`d happily do for the mere sake of scandal? Isn`t it true that the press WANTS abuses, just to cash-in, not giving to victims? Just as "MAN CHARGED WITH RAPE" hits the headlines, but if charges are dropped, it`s left out, so ruining innocent people`s lives?

I think it is because news is simply not able to be passed on and remain objective

The people who call journalists scum and the suchlike are probably the same ones who buy the tabloids that perpetuate the dubious practices outlined above. If the readers really gave a shit about the morality of what the papers were doing, they wouldn't buy them and the paper would go bust. Truth is, it's the readers that make it happen.

The term "scum" can be applied to any trade. Desmond, Murdoch, McKenzie, Rothermere(s)... media owners and editors in this country, to name just a few, are and were deserving of such an epithet. We have had bad popes (few good ones actually), bad kings, bad teachers, bad poets and bad judges but it makes none of those professions necessarily scum-like. Where would we be in the UK without Foot, Orwell, Pilger, Dickens or Campbell. America, for example, would have had another two years of that lying criminal, Nixon and his groteque henchmen were it not for Bernstein, Hersh, Woodward and Anderson. I popped back to journlism school (to lecture) and it became even more evident to me that tawdry media consumers make tawdry journalism, as smilieboy said more eloquently above. Rotten cardinals make rotten popes, evil courtiers evil kings and witless readers witless poets. FRP.

Is Ali Campbell a journalist? I thought he was the singer in UB40.

I've never considered people who write for the yellow rags to be journalists, but I suppose they qualify on a technicality.

I agree with Smillieboy. While journalists may on occassions pry into other people's lives, we all have a morbid fascination in reading about and discussing such issues. I find myself interested in Ronnie O'Sullivan's father. I know he ran an Essex porn empire and is currently serving a sentence for murder, but I don't know who he killed or why ..... and I want to know. But really, shouldn't I leave the poor lad alone? He's obviously risen above the problems of his family to create a successful career for himself.

I am a budding journalist. So far in my career, I've been sleeping at Student Government Association meetings and writing probably even more boring articles. There were no rapes or scandals or anything. There was a veto once, and that was pretty cool. But little else of interest.

cause their not picking up on stories that affect the people like why Scotland holds some of the highets suicide rates in Europe and why most of these suicides are dictated by socio econimical agendas that happen to be affecting people of irish descent, strange. Anyway we have a team on it is an understatement... chdub
