The change in wavelength is momentary, Radio. Look at the field emission of an electron as it goes from one potential level to another? Same thing applies hear. The Doppler shift is insufficient for making this measurement.

<< as slow as 37mph.>> where have you got this from Ely? No, Denver, all wavelengths do not travel at the same speed (close though) which explains Newton's rings in telescopes etc. If it's a re-run then you can see the end before the beginning - if tune in to the end of the original :o)

*An entirely new state of matter, first observed four years ago, has made this possible. When atoms become packed super-closely together at super-low temperatures and super-high vacuum, they lose their identity as individual particles and act like a single super- atom with characteristics similar to a laser* *Light, which normally travels the 240,000 miles from the Moon to Earth in less than two seconds, has been slowed to the speed of a minivan in rush-hour traffic -- 38 miles an hour* May be referring to that?

Thanks John... I won't argue with the next person who bets me his car will do twice the speed of light :o) Wonder how you get atoms packed super-closely together in a vacuum?

Lower the temp, lower the resonance between the Atoms.

Okay, I'm still confused on one thing. How can light speed up when it exits a prism? Does photon/electron particle interaction occur at a rate faster than the speed of light? Is there accelleration of light or instantanious speed change?

I actually got it from Stephen Fry on his QI show so I knew it must be true because he is god himself.

All I have to work with is Gieck's 5th edition of Engineering Formulas. The pictures suck, the typeface is small, my eyes are blurry and I have blisters on my fingers. It's been a long...long....

"The pictures suck, the typeface is small, my eyes are blurry and I have blisters on my fingers." I used to read magazines like that when I was 13. [%sig%]

Not sure Denver, but I think its not a case of an increase in V. More a change in wavelength in the same way that the electron 'jumps' from one potential to another. Their is quantum holes to consider? Its very likely that the El's move through these holes and that the Classical 3D model it soon to be shown to be completely inaccurate. Actually, 'in case anyone is interested that is'. This was first proposed in 1924 by Einstein and Satyendra Nath Bose. The latter experiment was carried out in Cambridge. This is basically how they did it. *Atoms crowded close enough in ultra-low temperatures would lock together to form what Hau calls "a single glob of solid matter which can produce waves that behave like radio waves* Interesting stuff.

Came across this. If the link don't work, its because I'm a numptey.

Actually. I think that should have been: If it isn't.. Then its official, I'm a numptey. ~:

Nope, you're a geek...or was that a nerd...I can't remember. I've been looking into lasers too long.

So taking all that hardcore physics into account, can you explain how Lt Uhura's hair remained perfectly coiffered even after the ship have gone into warp drive and bombarded by hostile fire?

feck me that was some bad grammar
John

Yes. Do explain Denver. *Thatsall Fox him, Jude*

Hairspray, Jude. Denver, I think you're looking at the problem from the wrong end. Light in a vacuum travels at a constant speed (denoted by C) it propogates slower through other mediums... so it's speed depends on the medium it is propogating through and so there is no acceleration.

Actually, I'm too busy solving real problems today to continue this. They frigg'n called me and woke me up at 5 AM this morning. I'm hungry and tired and now I don't know if I''ll be going faster or slower when I leave the prison....er prism....but I'll be moving at the speed of light what ever it is throught the 100 degree thick air here. Besides, if I get home in time, I might catch the end of a star trek re-run.
