Sorted. By the way (cos I wasn't the one who cherry-picked it originally) it rocks. Particularly liked "I'm thirty-five years old, skint as a broken biscuit and crumbling by the second.",
"Don't they know that their racist dream died years ago, no one is interested anymore?" and "My padlock to a well-balanced life has been slightly rusty of late."
Cheers
Emily
I have to agree. I love lines like this, and Ralph appears to have such a genius for constructing them. Years ago I used to play about with words, practicing throwing them together. I remember some of my favourite phrases that I never got to actually use were thing like, "A mind like a vacant lot, with thoughts frothing up out of a damp landscape of old tyres and empty cans." I loved that.
I also remember something that went kind of like, "We were as compatible as hot water and ice, congealing to make a soggy mud of our relationship." Perhaps I should start this phrase-practice again.
Anyway, back to you Ralph.
Because of this thread I spent a certain portion of today, when I should no doubt have been otherwise engaged on what I'm paid to do, reading your work. You write some skanky stuff, man. I love it! You get down and dirty with them, don't you?
I particularly enjoyed the Chip Shop one and "B". They hold the attention. Excellent work. "Up The Blues" is another excellent piece. Did you model the family on John Boy and the Waltons, or am I a little off the track here.
Great stuff, mate. Give us more short stories and more lines like, "Skint as a broken biscuit." Excellent stuff.
Dear Emily and Karl
Thank you so much for your kind words.
Look out for chapter two of 'Memoirs od A Disco Dancer'
Ralph
