How do i stop?

One day, I'd like to kick heroin altogether! I know that it's doing me more harm than good but it feels so good when that rush comes over me. And it improves my writing style. So, should I carry on and die young or drop my dearest friend, the needle and go it alone? HOW CAN I DO THAT? WHAT ELSE IS THERE IN THIS AWFUL SCREWED UP WORLD?

Barry, You might like to read my poem "High on Kai" in my "High on Kai" section. It probably won't help, but it may show you're not on your own. The address is www.abctales.com/abcplex/viewStory.cgi?s=6103 There's no magic answer to this one. If you have kids, then I could say to you, "Every £50 you spend on smack is £50 you could be spending on the kids." And to a straight person that would make sense. But when you've been around this @!#$ then you know it's not that simple, right? You may have found the answer yourself, though. You ask, "Just what else is there in this screwed up world?" Think for a moment. What else is there? A stack of things, right? What would you do if you weren't a smackhead? Only you know the answer to that one, but there's probably a lot of things. Start making a list ..... and keep it Sorry if I sound a bit patronising

hey I hope my message didn't seem cold or patronising. Its so hard to communicate through these message things, because you can't see the body langauge of the person you are talking to. What I meant was William Burroughs was a junkie. In the introduction to his book 'Naked Lunch' he talks in depth about the whole corruption of the junk pyramid. Bad people at the top of this pyramid making money out of the addicts in the street who are at the bottom of this pyramid. Evil people making money out of the algebra of need. The junk merchant degrades his client. Its the perfect product to sell to someone. A consumer will crawl through a sewer and beg to buy his product. The merchant can't go wrong, there is a lot of money to be made out of it, and junkies are the victims. At the moment round where I live there is a heroine epidemic. People I know are hooked on the stuff. Its grieves me man, William Burroughs explains it better than me. Reading that book 'Naked Lunch' put me off heroine man.. These people are nasty and don't care about me or you. Their people like the mafia and terrorists, and they are in all levels of society. It kind of opens your eyes to the horror of it when you read about it. I personally feel that the government making it illegal has just made the problem worse. People get impure heroine and crimelords make more money. Thats all making heroine illegal has done. It matters not whether something is legal or illegal people will still do it. The only way to stop the heroine epidemic is to cure the addicts. William Burroughs speaks about a cure in his introduction to the naked lunch which is very interesting. It sounded like a really positive step to solving the problem. Called the apomorphine cure. Only it is virtually unheard of, because people in higher levels of society have kept it quiet, not wanting people to get cured because there is so much money to be made from it. Thats how huge the problem is, how corrupt. It opened my eyes man... I didn't realise how corrupt it all was... How twisted and tragic. I met this homeless guy on the street a few weeks ago. He was crying and beat. His best mate had just overdosed and he had been to the hospital to do an ID check. I keep seeeing and hearing sad stories like this... these mafia people have got a lot to answer for. I hope you can break free from it mate. I send out positive thoughts to you. I hope this helps...

While in throes of "cold turkey" you may actually find that your writing improves....

Funky, I agree so much with what you say. I once wrote a piece on why I believe all drugs should be legalised. I did a lot of research for this article, including phoning the home office twice. If all drugs were legalised and sold by the government, the Columbian crime lords would go out of business, and the addict would be able to buy "purer" or "Unpolluted" gear. The amount of crime that is drug related - burglaries, muggings, prostitution etc. - is astronomical. If all drugs were legalised the money saved by the police and prison service would run into billions. This money could then be used to fund more centres for addicts and anti-drug campaigns and advertising. Think of prohibition in the States. All it succeeded in doing was making the likes of Al Capone rich and turning virtually every American into a criminal. And to top it all, the American public had to mix with criminals to booze, which left them open to all sorts of other temptations. One last point. It is never, ever, ever a sleezy drug dealer hiding behind a wall who offers someone their first fix or their first toot. It is ALWAYS a known and trusted friend. "Come on, I tried it, what's wrong with you? Are you chicken?" Watch out for your kid's friends people.

read " Naked Lunch." by William Burroughs. He writes a very sobering introduction.

Hi Barry, Boy do you pack a punch!! Never having touched the evil drug (pleased to say, after having growing up in the Leith district of Edinburgh). I don't or can't give advice. This comes from a life long smoker, who although gave up the dreaded weed for three years has gone back to it. All I can say is try, try and try again. If YOU really want to give up for YOURSELF and only you, you will beat it. I wish you luck my friend, 'cos you're gonna need it. Go on I dare ya, take that plunge and show 'em what yer made of. AJ
