Daisy's Excellent Performance Poem
Really liked 'Performance Poet' by Daisy. 'Oi gave it five', a Juke Box Jury reference that will really date me. Liked the symmetry of the opening stanzas, the strategic word placing, 'I, the performance poet' the single word lines 'wildly' and 'emote' with its half rhyme back to 'poet'.
The punch line about the comedian, is cleverly referential, setting off ripples of meanings within meanings. I could go on, but in view of previous debates about 'critiques', and the fine lines between pretentiousness, arrogance, misinterpretation and constructivity, will simply say I shall read more of Daisy's work now.
Thanks very much for your kind comments Tony - dead chuffed
I'm glad you appreciated them, good luck and keep those poems coming!
Dubberley chuffed, Daisy?
:-)
Do I detect that Daisy may be our illustrious editor, Emily?
If so, please note that as a relative newcomer to this site, I definitely didn't know this when I wrote my appreciation of the piece. Such 'knowledge' doesn't, of course, change my opinions, except that it makes me happy that we have an editor who can write so well.

Well, since I've been 'outed' (and mistakenly made a post under the username Daisy then signed it with my real name) I'll come clean. Yes, it's me. But I'd managed to keep it quiet (pretty much) for over a year so you're one of the first to know Tony.
Reason I wanted to keep it quiet was to separate the 'work me' from the 'writer me' and also, to see what it feels like to be a 'normal' user of the site rather than get any benefit from being editor (NB: I have never cherried anything of my own - although I have cherried work from other editors if I think it's good enough) I didn't want to get more people reading my work just cos I was editor.
And it felt *soooo* nice when you started this thread about my poem - a real kick :-)
As I said under my other guise, thanks so much for your comments - really really appreciated
Cheers
Em
*feels guilty for outing Daisy.*
*thought Conkers was a cracking poem.*
do so agree chant...though I suspect you mean us to detect your little play on words there...
but dang it daisy, I was feeling as smug as a bug about keeping my mouth shut. All that terribly difficult self-control gone to waste!!
Hope to see you Saturday 'Daisy'!
Best Wishes
Tony
Wonderful
Thanks - and sorry I didn't make it on Saturday - had a mate's party that I couldn't avoid without upsetting her. Will be at the next one with any luck though.
Tony pray do go on.. only envious cos I can't write like that..
Shouts: 'Are We Allowed To Critique Critiques Around Here!! '
*Cups ears for returning echoes..*
It's exactly that kind of constructive comment that is worth all the effort.
Daisy may not have felt that people would get the half rhyme back to poet or any of the other references but just a few moments of comment can really make a difference to a writers abilities, I get the feeling that even if Tony didn't like the piece he would have worded his views in a still constructive and positive way, we need more of this from lots of people.
As for keeping it private, well two points:
1: there will be people who will read Tony's comments and read the piece themselves, now armed with an educated review and able to pick up on elements they might not have got otherwise
2: we write so others can feel or enjoy or react. Anyone who doesn't want anyone else to read their work would have kept it in a private diary under the bed, putting it on a web site means you want it read by others and it naturally follows that you should like to know what those who do read it think of it. If they post their views on here then everyone gets to see what they think and agree or not as they see fit, including the author. It's not too much to expect people to be constructive and keep the praise to the level shown by Tony above without resorting to unexplained slander or rapturous worship.
So you don't just 'do' cosmopolitan Emily?
Thanks for all the replies. Very encouraging.
