if Emily is leaving Funky would make a wonderful editor?
He cares passionately about the site
is great at encouraging writers
He can do sublime poetry, humour and fantasy so knows about writing and what makes pieces work
He is also well good at computers
I'll second that one
I think Emily's role was much more along the lines of trying to get money and financial backing for the site than being a hands-on editor so much these days. Plus doing the front pages.
/me runs off to read some of funky's stuff, which I shamefully haven't done yet...
The job's a combination of lots of things - writing the front page and daily tales, dealing with help requests, occasional cherrypicking, selecting the writer of the week every third week, selecting work to present to publishers and literary agents, getting articles written/writing articles myself for the online magazine and trying to get financial backing for ABCtales and associated companies in various ways, like setting up the shop, arranging the critiquing service and getting commercial partners.
It's ace fun (*sniff, I'll miss it*)
The obvious question then: Why are you leaving? Was it something we said?
*rubs thumb and first finger together and winks*
reading elsewhere about the concept of "viable life thru writing", it's no surprise Emily is leaving, esp when you consider some of the heights writers attain when not even able to do just that :)
i'd even waive my claims to be the next Pope to be a "viable" writer
:-) Sirat, I love you all and will still be hanging around on the site but Richard (and Liana) are right - I've wanted to be a writer since I was four and the opportunity has finally arrived for me to be able to spend most of my time writing whilst still being able to pay my rent and eat so I owe it to myself to take the chance.
and bloody good for you pal.
go for it.
You'd regret it for the rest of your life if you didn't. As the old guy said "carpe diem"!
Great suggestion Fey..
Hope that Emily's replacement can come from within the talented community on this site..
Someone who has shown great imagination, passion and has
earned recognition and respect for their general abilities over
their time here..
Has anyone been in contact with the likes of Fish, Liana, Karl etc perhaps others.. who may be interested and who to my knowledge are looking for new roles???
may I suggest everyone waits until Tony Cook has announced what changes are going to be made to the site before this thread builds up a head of steam and you all end up nominating someone for a post that may not exist in its current form in the future. (see Emily's 'moving on' post).
:-)
Aawww.. ..you spoilsport Stormy.
Rightly said Stormy, and I think the role Emily had was more specialised than anyone here on the site is really equipped for. While I am utterly disposable and easy to replace, she is not, and I for one am going to miss her.
Crikey, this thread took me by suprise.
Yeah, Stormy is right in what he says and so is Andrew. Best not to start getting into lengthy discussions and nominations, about who should be future editors on the threads. Leave that to Tony Cook and the people who run abctales to decide.. these jobs require a lot more work and commitment than people realise..
Emily did a great job, and from Emily's description of it above, it sounds like a multi-skilled job, that requires a lot of specialization, hard work and commitment.
I wish her luck with her writing man. I think everyone here is gonna miss her.
But you've got to follow your dreams man, or you'll regret it otherwise. Life is short..
So total respect.
