Connections by Chooselife

I felt identification with this poem's sentiments as I am working on a short story about identity at the moment. It speaks of something so deep and universal and the mystery of childhood - that place that slips through the fingers irrevocably. As a parent I am constantly aware of the here and now of their world and the role I play in it, and the way that they might view it all in the future. It is the most wonderful part of being a parent, looking at a child and thinking - there he is in that magical place (and one day he might write poetry about it!). Chooselife's poem, for me, is questioning why the pre-conscious life is such a powerful memory and has such a hold on us, and how we are to relate to it as adults.

Thanks Emma for the kind comments. I posted this just over a year ago and had almost forgotten about it. Childhood memories are very powerful and not always beneficial. What I’m trying to say (in my cack-handed way) is that certain aspects of my upbringing continue to constricted me. [%sig%]

Its short but really profound and i fail to see how any one could not relate to this, especailly like the elastic band line, just made so much sense.

Childhood memories of course are both positive and negative and can restrict and liberate us, depending on their nature, I was reasonably happy as a young child, but things went badly wrong for me as a teenager, which is still childhood in one sense and not in another because self-awareness is so much greater. I am trying to learn not to feel constricted by bad memories and instead make something positive out of them that will help me get my wings back. I am trying to learn to be true to myself again in spite of spending years in disguise. Feeling the constraints the past holds on you is a fantastic source of creative energy, 'cause you're writhing and wriggling with them.
