Creating a website - any ideas?

I've noticed that a lot of aspiring writers have their own websites as a showcase for their work. I was wondering if I should do likewise. Does anyone have any ideas how to do it? I don't want to spend much/any money so I was thinking a blog site could work but I really don't know. All ideas gratefully received.

I use a website design program called Website X5 which I picked up quite cheap from PC World. It's very easy to use and has a very easy to understand inbuilt wizard. I used it to create www.ocelotpublishing.co.uk. Not many bells and whistles but good enough!

Thanks very much for those, I'll have a bit of an investigate.
I did a short Open University course on website design. http://www3.open.ac.uk/study/undergraduate/course/t183.htm It focused mainly on the design aspect, rather than the complicated (IT) stuff, but I learned a lot from it. It wasn't that expensive, and lasted about 10 weeks. I would recommend it.

Cheers - sounds like good advice
Check out my website it was produced with Word Press 3.2 it's simple and has an abundant amount of Widgets and Plugins that allow you to do almost anything. I am no web wizard and found it really easy . You can also get a pre set website at overblog.com on there it explains everything about getting your own domain ..
