Hamed V. Barrera

This is slightly old news, and will probably only attract the attention of Andrew and Ralph anyway, who I know to be fight fans.

There was a programme recently showing Prince Nazeem Hamed's preparation for his fight with Barrera. It was about 10 months too late because the fight happened last Easter. Barrera kicked Hamed's butt in grand style, for all who weren't aware.

The programme showed Hamed concentrating more on his hairstyle and ring entrance than on any serious training, which is why he lost, of course. He had no plan B when he wasn't able to knock Barrera out.

Hamed did mention that he wanted his boxing gloves to be made of the finest goatskin so that he could ram them in Barrera's face. A reverence to Barrera's Mexican heritage.

Hamed's a practicing Muslem. So I'm just wondering here that if Barrera were to comment that he wanted his own gloves to be made out of pigskin, would that have been a racist remark?

I love Hamed to bits, I think he's the most stylish fighter we've ever had in this country and criminally overlooked because terrestial TV can't afford boxing anymore. But I think he should never have gone to America to fight - sure, that's where the money is, but what British crowds were lapping up as entertainment and craft, the Americans were booing for showboating. Someone like Hamed, that shot his confidence to bits. Always knew that not having a guard would catch up with him once he met up with class, but it is so mesmeric to watch. Having done a bit myself, it is a truly awesome thing to watch someone avoid punches just by swaying and positioning. Karl - do you reckon Ali will be any good ?

I used to like Hamed, but he was a major disappointment against Barrera, who so impressed me on the night. His facial expressions were absolutely blank at all Hamed's delaying tactics. They didn't bother him at all. He just went in there and did a job. As for Laila Ali, no I don't think she'll be any good. Not at boxing at any rate. She might make it as a model or actress.

Dear Fight Fans Hamed went down in the usual way that a good fighter does. Too much showboating and not enough brains. A great fighter can come back and back again. Roberto Duran and Ali for instance. Yeah, I know Duran bottled it against Leonard but he was fighting a genius at the peak of his abilities. I am looking forward to the Ali film very much. I am a huge admirer of the director Michael Mann. It has the right ingredients. Seconds Out! Ralph

Except of course it has Will Smith in it. That alone, makes me want to miss it. Was it Mann who directed 'The Insider'?

Britain must get these movies later than we do in the states. Will Smith is very good in Ali.

Yes Michael Mann directed 'The Insider’. He also directed 'Heat' with Pacino and De Nero and 'Red Dragon' which is a far superior movie than 'Silence of the lambs' A great director Ralph
