Smug couples

According to MSN News, top things that annoy us about happy couples are

1. Cute nicknames
2. Public displays of affection
3. Finishing each other's sentences
"You know, this appetiser reminds me of..."
"...that dish we had when we were in Paris!"
4. Utter condescension
He's smart and good-looking; she's smarter and (hatefully!) gorgeous.
5. Even more utter self-absorption...aparently... A happy couple could cruise by a twenty-vehicle pileup on the M25 involving a bus full of nuns and a Girl Guide troop, and all the girl will say is something like, "you see the orange-yellow upholstery in that people carrier? That's what I had in mind, only a little less obvious."

I'd add to that...Mr and Mrs Perfect always have damned good salaries and purchased their property before the boom

How about those letters inserted into Christmas cards which tell you that they've both had a promotion and their kids have a) learnt to play obscure traditional musical instruments b) become missionaries and have already converted half of Africa c) got fifteen A* grades at GCSE d) are presently in the Arsenal reserve team ...etc, etc ... ..oh, and an old Auntie from Guildford has left them oodles of money which they don't actually need because of their previous fiscal prudence

For me it's the air of untouchability that annoys me. As though tradgedy has no place in their lives..... either personal or global. As though the things which are important to you are irrelevent and beneith their notice now. Also if you're not in the club you're deviant and troubled. I wonder what it feels like to be in a bubble, complete and secure. I find myself envious occasionally, although I despise their existence I still sometimes wish....... Not enough though. Wonder if I'll join the ranks of the self righteous someday? Hope not. Hope so. Bugger.

I love to see happy couples...good on 'em I say. That air of untouchability won't last long, believe me - let 'em enjoy it while they can. And if, by some miracle it DOES last, bloody good luck to them.

well we did purchase our property before the boom, but apart from that do not fit into any of your criteria, we were just a lucky couple...

Kissing my fiancee in Kroger is hardly being smug. Have you see the price of tomatoes?

I was once part of such a happy alliance but like Martin we didn't meet many of the criteria. It is something I cherish that "I have loved" *lets out nostalgic sigh*
