I think all this banning stuff is bollocks, personally. I hope the missing persons -do- find a way around it, and it's regrettable that speech is curtailed on a supposedly 'free' forum. 'Free', perhaps, if one agrees with everyone else, and says nothing that pisses other people off.
But I'm not really on anyone's *side*; there are people I happen to have more interactions with but I try to avoid any whiff of the 'us against them' mentality. I don't 'know' anyone on this forum personally, so how can I make any kind of judgment as to what kind of person they really are, or whether what they -say- is what they actually -believe-? George, I believe in giving -everyone- an equal hearing, whether I agree with them or not, whether others agree with them, or not. You'll note, please, that I don't seem to have trouble with the very people everyone else seems to have trouble with. Why is that, I wonder? Is it because I don't stoop to calling people names? Because I respond to what they say in a reasonable manner?
I'm trying hard to not perpetuate this stupid, snipey attitude that seems to have washed over the forum the last couple of months. In return, I get people trolling under other names, saying things about me that really aren't particularly nice, or particularly accurate.
There's a real sense of 'The ABCTales Club of Four' or however many actually belong to the Thought Police. Very much 'either you're with us, or you're against us'. So stupid. GW Bush says things like that. If you don't like, for example, what Jasper says, then don't respond. That, however, shouldn't mean that I, too, am not 'permitted' to respond. Talk about a pack mentality!
It's like Stephen. He comes on here when he's troubled and sometimes has a rant. The response he gets is, 'Don't answer him. He never reads them.' Well, actually, he -does-, and he responds. I try to be positive and encouraging toward him, because he's clearly been in a bad place, and people in bad places need support.
Should I, however, not respond to him simply because others don't feel it's 'worth it'?
And the rest of you clearly derive some kind of egoistic pleasure out of perpetuating the nastiness toward other forum members: Smiley in particular. I don't give a rat's arse what went on between you, George. That's between you, and frankly I don't want to know. But you (and others) never, never let it go. It has nothing to do with me, but I witness this endless conflict every time I come on here.

Oh, I'm all for decency, civility, and responsibility, as I try to bang on about as often as possible. I think, however, that for certain determined individuals such as our exotic friend in India, ignorance (ours) is bliss; if no-one responded, ever, to any of her posts, she would grow bored of her (rather amusing) harassment and go away eventually. Problem is, someone always has to respond, even if it's only with a 'fuck off'. She doesn't 'ruin' the forum for me because I simply don't pay much attention to her. I look at the other posts, instead. I see who posted what, and respond accordingly.
As to Jasper, I was asked if I found -any- of his posts so horrible that I felt it was justified in banning him. My answer is: no. I think much of what he says is a deliberate wind-up to see how much outrage he can provoke in people. I just don't pay attention to the wind-ups. If he says something I find personally egregious, I tend to tell him. Politely. Thus, I so far haven't had any personal problems with him, and prefer to keep it that way. I don't think, however, that being outrageous warrants being banned. I don't give much credence to slippery slope fallacies, but if people start to get banned for saying X, do they then get on the bad list for saying Y? I just wonder.
TC and staff are remarkably broadminded about things, and no doubt they get hacked off at having to constantly tweak the site; but it IS a forum, and people do have the right to their opinions. I don't think you're a bad person AG, a little mis-guided maybe, but mostly that you can't seem to get to grips with the fact that this forum, indeed any forum that is open is always going to be a microcosm of society in general. I don't have a solution for rita, really. Personally, I just ignore her. I've seen her bombardments before. I suppose where she's concerned I do understand the justification of Tony & Co. simply deleting her posts, especially her repeat ones. I tend to feel a bit sad for people that do things like that; it speaks of how lonely and disconnected we can feel, when we get pleasure out of irritating others to such an extent. Like, negative attention syndrome.
But as for others who are simply disagreeable to many, barring similar harassment, I just don't see the need to ban.
