the trouble is we think people change

I only now came across this marvellous poem. I liked the title as it tells already from the start this simple and important truth, something most of us have "trouble" to take in, as we hope for change in others or try our utmost to change them. The way cudo-cudo manages this in a poem is fantastic! The picture of this relationship is so vividly painted and many people will recognise one thing or the other. I definitely do. It is if I were going down the towpath myself and suddenly remembered all those observations. The way a reader can identify with a poem somehow, I think, rates its value. The more one does, the better the poem seems. Well certainly for me.

I posted a link to this on the other Cudo thread. On re-reading, I enjoyed this even more. The characterisation develops through brilliant observations. It manages to be really dark, somehow, while depicting a relatively pleasant scene. This is really good. One of the best I've read on ABC in a while, in my humble. One thing, Cudo, is there a line break before 'malcontent' or is it just ABC tales formatting being rubbish? Ta! Joe
for me this described those irritations of knowing someone so well that you fall into a pattern of interacting that is so ingrained you can predict every move they make. Maybe if 'she' had leaned foward and kissed those drops of sweat... i get the feeling that the other person in this is as trapped as the narrator. Very subtle characterisation. Juliet
