'Tory vermin'

‘When I speak of Tories,’ Bevan said, addressing the Durham Miner’s Gala in July 1948, ‘I mean the small body of people who, whenever they have the chance, have manipulated the political influence of the country for the benefit of the priveledged few. I am [son of a Welsh miner] prepared to forgive and forget the wrongs done to me. I am not prepared to forgive and forget the wrongs done to my people.'

Labour's response was the creation of the NHS and the welfare state.

Miliband and his cronies response is...?

An adoption of Thaterite policies in the guise of New Labour.  Blair dismantled the last vestiges of the Labour Party and Miliband  has done nothing (nor will do anything) to reverse that betrayal.

I too am the son of a miner. After WW 11, and spending four years in it, including two years in the Battle of Britain, dad later ended up in the local Noranda Mines Limited. I joined him in 1962 and worked there for four months before escaping to other jobs where there was no 3,000 degree F temperatures. I worked on the anodes where molten copper (the purest in the world) was poured into a cavity on a moving platform where I prepared the metal for the copper so it would not stick after solidifying. It was too routine and hot for me.

However I was thankful to the Mine company which endured from 1929 to 1979 non-stop, 24-7. It went down 8,200 feet and out two miles on the bottom. I could only stand to go to 2,500 feet down since the ear pressure was almost unbearable. But the money was good, $1.67 per hour. The mine did much good for the cities of Rouyn-Noranda (combined population 40,000, my birthplace and 350 miles north-west of Montreal).
