Story and Poem of the Month

Huge thanks this month to Coral (seashore) who very kindly took the time to select July's Poem and Story of the Month. Congratulations to the worthy winners!

Whilst reading through so many wonderful pieces for this month's picks, I had a strong sense that my late daughter Julia (Overthetop1 on Abc) was with me, and maybe influencing my final choices.  I’d like to think this was the case, so my shortlist consisted of pieces that I could relate to on a personal level, and have stayed in my mind not only throughout July, but I’m sure will be there in the recesses for far longer than that.

My story pick is the very moving, original, and beautifully written Birthday Phone Call - how can we forget the subtle but emotionally-charged ending of this wonderful piece by Yume1254

In many ways, my poem of the month has similar qualities -  gently understated, visual like a painting in words, and intensely moving. I felt I was there with the narrator, on the beach, watching the sea, and feeling the sadness of loss that memories evoke, ending with that special moment when her child joins her in her reverie.  So, my poem pick is Eriksay by love_writing.
