Before a tree can begin to grow tall and strong it must first develop a sturdy root system. Before a stock can begin to show real growth it needs time to develop the same sort of unseen yet crucial root system to nourish and support that growth. I have often noticed that when planting a garden in the spring, the plants take a couple of weeks to begin showing obvious growth. I presume this is because most of the growth is occurring below ground in establishing the root system. 

I was in the backyard several years ago and noticed a small sapling rising up to about a foot and a half from the ground. I thought it was in a good spot and rather than pull it up I placed a tomato cage around it and decided to see what would become of it. That tree is now roughly 30 or 40 feet high and I think what I most enjoy about it is the fact that I didn’t buy it at some nursery or big box home supply store. I just noticed the little tree was there and gave it an opportunity to develop on its own. In return I have been rewarded with shade, and squirrels, and birds and leaves which need to be raked in the late Autumn. Hey, it’s not all rainbows and unicorns when it comes to trees, or cheap stocks for that matter..

I have officially arrived at the halfway mark in my little financial experiment!

Being completely honest, unemotional, and somewhat blunt… This sucks! At least so far. Not at all what I had hypothesized at the start. I had really figured that at worst the ups and downs would more or less even out. Clearly I underestimate the power of the down side! 

That said however, a close examination of this week’s results shows some welcome surprises! First of all, I have a semi-substantial gain this week of over $69. Could this signal a turnaround for the second half? If it is, it will need to ramp up to merely get back to even money. Second, I have a new number one in High Tide (HITI) thanks to a 15% gain of over $26 coupled with a slight drop by Mind Medicine (MNMD) which exactly matches last week’s slight gain. 

High Tide has been on something of an acquisition rampage these past few months. They look to be adding value by trying to spread their root system and the market is rewarding the strategy with a satisfying growth in the share price canopy. If they can string together a couple more good weeks I see a sprout into the green numbers again! 

Additionally, I have 9 positions showing gains this week including 5 with double digit gains! The big gain this week is another cannabis sector resident. Greengro Technologies (GRNH) finishes the week with a 55% surge of over $33. This is after taking a 25% loss in late Friday trading! They ended last week at $0.0077, rose well over a penny to $0.0184 before settling back to $0.012 at the close. The gains were steady and accelerating during the week, peaking out midday Friday with a big drop off just before the close. This would usually be called profit taking in a more substantial environment however, with a price still shy of two cents, I question just how much profit is there to be reaped. The bigger question in my mind is, what happens Monday and next week? Three more weeks on this track and I could have another green bud to enjoy! (so to speak..)
