Bright Side

One of the many bonuses of being 65 is a £1 reduction on cinema tickets. It ain’t all liver spots and boycotts. Celebrated this windfall by going to see Steven Spielberg’s film ‘Disclosure Day’ - sans caramel Freddo, but coped marvellously with two cherry brandy choccies instead. (Most likely medicinal for the heart).
Don’t read much about movies prior to seeing them anymore. Either fancy them or don’t, so go and see them or don’t. The pile on of negative commentary, before ‘Wuthering Heights’ was even released, was ridiculous. Mostly hailing from outraged young women who hadn’t seen it yet. They seemed to want everything to stay the same, and just be cosy in their ‘I heart Emily Bronte’ pyjamas, coorying in under a weighted blanket, with a tray of smashed avocado toasts and a spicy, pumkinoliscious coffee concoction to hand*. Where’s the creativity in staying the same? IMHO, Emerald Fennel’s adaptation was witty, clever and captivating, especially her characterisation of Nelly Dean. Hong Chau really was immaculate in that role. Love, love, loved Jacob Elordi (Oh Lordy!) as Heathcliff, but then, who wouldn’t. Nae deid yit!
Wish I had read something about ‘Disclosure Day’ beforehand though, as that’s two-and-a-half hours of my life I can’t get back. Apart from an Indianna-Jonesian action scene involving a train, it’s tortuous in thought and discordant in delivery. Even Emily Blunt can’t save it. (Young women, stay in yer jammies). Main take-aways; I am too old for alien schmaltz or films that last longer than 90 minutes. Changed my mind about upgrading my phone.
Best part was the drive home in the simmer dim. Air scented by the green wheat heating up before it turns rose-gold, ebullient trees, froth of meadowsweet and lady’s bedstraw. A flaming orange sunset at ten o’clock at night.
*Actually, this sounds lovely. I can relate.

IMHO – an archaic mnemonic from the pre-Tik Tok era when people used to send something called texts. Meaning, In My Humble Opinion.
Nae deid yit – an expression used by (some might say, creepy) older women excusing themselves from lusting after younger men, acknowledging that while no longer young, ‘I’m not dead yet’ - so can still admire from afar (some might say, ogle). (Although, there is a case to be made that he was asking for it dressed like that).
