Shulamith Firestone - the forgotten Feminist

Not long ago I got a ride in Kirkcaldy from my old pal Brian who I have known since uni days.

Brian is now a senior paramedic.

He harked backed to the old days where as a rookie cabbie he was learning 'the knowledge' on the busy streets of Ayr.

In those days all the drivers gave lifts to hitchers.

We used our savvy and went for it.

Then we heard the horrible story of aileen wournos.

Aileen was American she was a mad murdering bitch who took out at least eight truckers in the Usa and Canada.

It destroyed trust.

I only realised yesterday that she was fiction.

I realised this when I read the true story of a brave Canadian Lady who is still alive and thriving today.

Her name is Shulamith Firestone.!!

Born to a religious Jewish family in Cinncinatti Shulamith or Shulie as she was called by her feminsit and art college pals really went for it!!

Art, feminism, radical off-off-bradway theatre shulie was in there!!

Her first book the dialectics of sex, written when she was only 25 is very readable and to the point.

Shulie was caught at the crossroads of everything, multisexuality, context, meetings, mental health struggle the lot.

She never gave up.

Her second book Airless Spaces is short, terse and tells it like it is.

Rumour was put about that she starved herself to death.

She did not.

She got over to Nunraw Abbey where disguised as a novie she escaped.

Shulamith Firestone, whose family were involved in the manufacture of tires still works tirelessly as a modern revolutionasry heroine.

Her works are available at bookshops and online.
