HOLLOW POINT - Robert Craven

I think some books are too long. That the writer's voice is somehow lost in the padding. I have just released HOLLOW POINT; the fourth WW2 novel featuring my character, Eva. It is a short novel, just above the size of a novella, that has allowed me to find my voice. Its short - only 46000 or so words, it could be read in a few hours; a lean beast, all-in-all.

My influences over the years, the writer's who capture my imagination, the one's my novels 'jam along to' are steeped in the economy or words.

Harold Pinter, Elmore Leonard, Dennis Wheatley, Berthold Brecht, Dennis Potter, James Herbert - TV, film, theatre and books of the 1970's, thin PAN Paperbacks that could be folded into a jacket pocket. The dialogue of smoky interiors, quiet minimal words delivered with light brushstrokes.

HOLLOW POINT and the Eva series - Get Lenin,  Zinnman,  A finger of night; try to capture a 'slice of time' - a jump-cut read that have charcters dropped into the all-too familiar landscape of the second world war. I don't believe in holding the reader's hand. I believe that a reader needs to make their own mind up; for nearly 100 years through cinema and television, the mind of our generations are hard-wired to the visual, rather than the verbal.

I keep the descriptons and locations to a minimum. If I can see these in my head, its very likely, everyone can too. There are huge set pieces, with these, I try to reduce the word count, allow some passages to 'Jar' and give a sense of displacement.

Also, I see these as pulp (a conveneint excuse to paper-over any shortcomings). a chewing gum series that you might want to jettison as there's nothing to chew on, or, you might like to have a good chomp and turn the pages. Hammett, Chandler and Carver too have an influence.

Here's the premise for HOLLOW POINT:

Urus Martan; a desolate mountain situated in the far reaches of The Third Reich has a secret
A secret tasked to Eva Molenaar, Nicklaus Brandt, Henry Chainbridge and Peter de Witte to investigate by Churchill's shady right hand man Brendan Bracken.
From Buenos Aires to London, Paris and Marseilles Eva's adventure leads her directly to a renegade British nobleman in league with Martin Bormann, who is funding the secret of Urus Martan.
A secret capable of wiping out a city, a city like Moscow or Tehran where the fate of Nazi Germany will be decided by Roosevelt, Stalin and Churchill.
Now that Stalingrad has fallen.
Eva's quest will exact a heavy price, not only on her, but on the team who face impossible odds...

Its on Amazon only for now and each book is now €0.99 / £0.99 & $1.24 and only available as a Kindle.

For now.

good luck with this. you may be right about the writer's voice getting lost. Guilty of such sins.
