We wuz robbed!

Only I'm not talking about sporting defeats.

We were actually robbed. That is, Rokkitnite and I took everyone out for our joint birthday celebrations at the dog track (where I won a cool £38.75 on a reverse forecast of Osprey and Quickstep,) and when we got back, some thieves had come in through the window and nicked our DVD player, plus my bag, which they'd emptied and converted into a swag bag. I think they've got my copy of 'Memoirs of a Geisha' too. Then they exited through the back-door, unlocking it from the inside.

We had the forensics guy round this morning. Very interesting! He didn't have much faith in the window and door handle, but he was pleased about the Orange box they'd ripped into (hoping for a mobile phone, of course,) so he took that away.

Exciting stuff.

Getting robbed is horrible, I lost five years worth of CDs once. Glad to hear that your managing to take it on the chin, you poor buggers.

Hard Luck Hen! It's horrible - a violation of your space. They're only things, I know, and can be replaced at some time and after a load of hassle but it's the sheer callousness of the human who did it that gets at me. You clearly weren't rich, it's obviously going to hurt you and yet he/she (almost certainly he) hasn't given that a second thought. Don't let it cloud your faith in humans - if we change society then we change human nature- it is not a fixed immutability - so keep up the fight!

This brings back memories of the time when we was robbed... Students sharing a house in North London.... they broke in and messed the place about taking only some clothing and a radio or something.... Best thing, they left my brand spanking new ZX Spectrum (gold dust they were) which was connected to the TV downstairs. Presumably they did not know what it was, pc's being so new at the time. This dates me, I know. Also they would have required a trucck to have taken away any mobile telephones, had we had any! Imagine robbers going to the trouble of breaking in only to decide that you stuff is not even worth nicking! The insult! Anyway one hopes they catch those low-lifes Hen.

I've known a couple of burglars and most have no concept whatsoever of the effect it has on the victims. They see themselves as efficient speciallists, professionals even, as opposed to heartless cowards. They always say things like "Well they will have been insured" "its better than going in and hurting someone" "they'd do the same to me given the opportunity" "most of that stuff was probably bought nicked anyway" And most are more than happy to talk about it all day. Methods of entry etc. they brag because they see it as the "Robin Hood" lifestyle. B4STARDS

Oh, I wasn't allowed to retake it, so my grade average is currently lingering in 2:2 territory, but provided no more mishaps occur I'll be back up to a 2:1 by the end of the year.

Not gonna happen. Even Tim fell just short, and I've already blown my chances. Time to cut and run. I can get a 2:1 no probs, so it's high time I started attending to post-grad plans...

Yeah, I'm applying for the MA (in fact, Tony's done me the honour of being one of my referees,) but I'm not on it yet, and I haven't a clue what I'll do for funding if I don't get one of the awards (most of which you can only apply for once you've got the place.) As most interviews for other options are starting right now, I need to select some alternative routes (like law school....one idea. Or publishing. Or maybe just permanent employment,) and chase them down. That way I get a choice, come August.

We wuz robbed! That was what I thought when I received the calendar. There were definitely missing bits that I could not quite put my finger on.

I've never been robbed in my home, but I was robbed at empty (I think) gun point in Rio once. I really don't understand why I've never been robbed at home, though. I'm less of a target than anyone else. Renter's insurance is a good idea, though I've never had it myself. I'm not sure I would trust a Polish insurance company to pay a claim. Chin up, and look at it this way, there's probably a good story in it if you can have a long chat with the forensics guy at some point. I know someone in Canada who is a forensic psychologist....some interesting stuff there!

Sorry to hear about your robbery. My flat was once broken into but the burglars were overheard and ran off. They had only taken a large handbag of mine containing letters and holiday pics, some of which were quite absurd. A few weeks later I was on the bus and some teenagers who I didn't know, kept laughing at me and knew my name. I guessed they had been the burglars but there was nothing I could do about it. I felt paranoid.

You could have hit them over the head with your new handbag - just think of what Margaret Thatcher would have done in the same circumstances. On the other hand...

Margaret Thatcher was the worst offender the country ever produced. She stole everything we owned and had the audacity to sell it all to her freinds. She didn't even get what it was worth either. Is the evil bitch still breathing?

No, I shot that f**ker in the back too. *blows billowing smoke from shotgun* Next!

Once we'd realised what had happened, I think everything we found that hadn't been taken was an added bonus. I was really thrilled that they'd emptied out my bag before taking it - I recovered loads of useful bits and pieces (dictaphone, alarm clock, notebook etc.) from the back garden. I don't really feel any need to catch up with whoever did it - it just makes you feel vulnerable. Like the wind's been in or something. It reminds you that the potential is always out there, whatever your situation. Besides, we're a bunch of prats - we practically left whoever it was a trail of bread crumbs. Back gate ajar, window blatantly unlocked, DVD player right next to it, key still in the backdoor... We're just sooo lucky that they didn't realise we were out for so long. If they'd just gone into the next room, they'd have found so much more. We're insured, but insurance doesn't cover personal losses (much needed coursework on hard-drives, for instance,) or the glut of stuff that isn't very expensive but will take a while to replace - like Mark's five years worth of CD's. As I say, we felt (and still feel) *very* lucky. To have lost just a cheap DVD player and a bag is just a wake-up call really.

As business twats say: in every crisis, find an opportunity. Not that I'm suggesting taking the insurance company to the cleaner's or out. That would be WRONG and IMMORAL. Hope it all gets sorted, Hen. You're a good lad. Even if you do use tautologies like "added bonus". Tsk. Laters.

Most insurance companies wouldn't pay out if they knew you had 'helped' the thieves anyway, Jon.

sorry to hear that hen - something or someone must've disturbed them - maybe their conscience woke up - anyway's no one got hurt and it doesn't sound like any stuff with emotional value got lifted - tho I'm sure your hard drive did mean quite a lot to you!! Just dont buy anything decent - that's one of the 10 uni commandments isn't it??? I got done a few times as a student and I had a friend who got robbed 3 times in a fortnight - he couldn't understand why they came back the last time as they had completely wiped him out ....until he went to look for his car keys the next day!
