Never Let Your Kids Near Your PC

Those here that don't care too much for me will be thrilled to know that I have just endured a nightmare three days. It all started late on Thursday night. I had just replied to the infinitely intelligent anon sam and was going to bed. At this point number 2 son, aged 23, slightly pissed, accompanied by 3 mates and bags of indian takeaways, comes through the door. He asked me to leave the PC on because he wanted to check his email. I disconnected my ISP and went upstairs. (He and the terrorist have their own ISP and pay for it) The next morning I logged-in and made a reply on the same thread not noticing that the user name had been changed. Well, I didn't notice until I refreshed the thread. It turned out that No2 son and has mates had read the thread and decided I needed some support. (Not that I think I do) Anyway he had gone to work so I didn't find out exactly what had been going on until he came in at 6pm. A few minutes after I made my last post my PC went into self-destruct mode. It was infested with 2 different virus' and kept crashing within seconds of me re-booting. The boy said he'd only looked at his email (but I eventually found a porn site listed in the history) and admitted opening a couple of attachments from people he didn't know. Norton antivirus found the virus but could neither remove it or quarantine it, the worst one (W32.Welchia.B.worm) had migrated all over the PC. This machine has 5 hard drives, three 120GB, one 80GB and one 60GB. That's an awful lot of GB's. Two of the larger drives are partitioned giving me 8 logical drives in all. One of the 120GB drives was trashed completely and the others had to be removed from the machine and installed in another machine downstairs on which I had downloaded a fix for the virus from Symantec. It's taken me three days to get this machine back in to working order and even now it's unstable. It now has a password on it and NOBODY will use it in future. The net result is I lost a HD, a lot of sleep and was made to look a prat on the forum. Since I've been gone I see the threads have blossomed. I now have a lot of reading to catch up on, and no doubt, some replies to post. I notice that dicko has decided that he's had enough of the bear garden and has gone cap in hand to the 'nice' people. I also noticed that he had to make a big show of saying he'd 'defected', and griff couldn't resist making a snidey remark agreeing with the given reasons. As far as I'm concerned 'defected' is the right word and the associated adjective is very apt too. I wonder how long it will be before his ambition cramps the style of the egos over there?

Sorry to hear your machine suffered at the hands of pissed offspring. If it's not too personal a question, why do you have 500GB of disk space? I think I'm excessive with thirty odd.

Well I never expected you to be anything other than cynical Colin, but I really don't give a shit what anyone believes. What I would say, is that the boy was far less antagonistic than I would be. (I can see he needs some lessons in forum posting) Smille, the reason I have so many drives is because everytime I have a problem it was easier to get another drive and start again, thinking I could then transfer my important files and archives at my leisure. The problem is, I don't reall have that much leisure and what I do have I prefer to spend lying to Colin. As a consequence I've accumulated several drives and when I built this machine I used a RAID motherboard that gave me the options of up to eight IDE drives. I've since added a 6 port USB2 PCI card. I really should spend some time sorting the whole sorry mess out.

Having just re-read both threads it occurs to me I may have misinterpreted Colin's post. If so I apologise in a grovelling manner.

Oh nice one apologies and acceptance all on the same thread things are looking up, now in a short while when I go to my bed I'm sure I will sleep much better and as such I will give thanks for being privileged to have seen that rare sight. Said with the deepest respect, "Well done both of you"

Ha ha ha , Kath, I think you may have misconstrued both of us. Colin never believes anybody who is trying to give an honest explanation for something he would prefer to believe the worst about.

Oh Missi, you've been in the same boat as me, except my 8 year-old son wrecked mine after going on the Sheffield Fun Run website,..no, I don't really know how it all happened. It's the first time I've been infected (no jokes please). The windows xp user welcome screen thingy is a great way to keep your internet connection password protected etc while enabling sharing of a pc with family.

apparently the crashing thing is caused by a nasty worm going round at the moment
