What's the matter Lagerboy .....

..... Afraid you might taste something?

Went to CAMRA's beer festival at Olympia last night with a gang of the lads and bought a Hobgoblin t-shirt with the above slogan emblazoned above a colourful picture of Goblins drinking pints of the stuff.

I've missed Olympia's beer festival for the last few years, so it was great to get back there again. Managed to get my glass home safely as well.

You're never short of a good laugh at a beer festival are you? I went one year on the Friday night, got up on the Saturday morning and went straight back down there again for an all day session. I remember another night, a different year, when three of us went along together. We paced ourselves pretty well throughout, but finished off with three pints of Owd Roger at 7.2%! That did us in. When we finally got kicked out at 10 o'clock, for it always closes at that time, we went straight in the pub across the road (who welcomed us with open arms, considering we'd just spent all our money elsewhere). Last night I tried to stay between 4.2% and 4.6%, although did sink a couple at 5%

My favorite's always the Cains stall. It's a Liverpudlian brewery and they offer some exceptional beers. However, we came across a lovely glass of suds last night entitled Old Hookey, although I can't remember the brewery. However, it really went down well.

What real ales have you taken a liking to of late?

(Apologies to our American contributors who won't be able to join in this debate).

Old Hookey? Could be the Hook Norton brewery in Oxfordshire.

I of course love a pint of 'Mings Magic Ratchet'. A local Walthamstow brew that was famously drunk by Alfred Hitchcock whilst he lived here. You can get it in the Nags Head around the corner.

Arrrrr matey! But I do have an authentic mason jar full of Kentucky moonshine! It's probably 30 years old now. White Light'n. Only been sniffed once... I passed out.

My father, a former landlord and advisor for Boddingtons, used to wax lyrical about Moorhouses beer and, in particular, 'Pendle witches brew' .."beat the big boys" he would say of the small brewery that won an award over the likes of.. well the big boys obviously. He used to call lager "a waste of good gass"

I have very fond (and occasionally incomplete) memories of Tolly Cobald beers, particuarly Tolly Shooter. But I only know one pub that sells it (down near Ipswich) and I have not been there for years.
